By alpha tag I assume you mean the carrier name that's displayed. That comes from the cell broadcast and presumeably you are on one of the cingular cells.
I used to have a prog that allowed you to edit it - I'll see if I can find it for you - but does it really make a difference?

The prog was custom cabbage's utils which no longer seems to be available - I'm sure there is a reg hack to do it but can't find it...

i noticed in windows mobile 6, which i put on my blackjack, it dosent have the operators name folder to changes the tag, hmm
