Right, this is my first attempt at a video unboxing, so play nice! :D

As mentioned in an earlier post, we've got our hands on a retail boxed Asus P750 (due to be released in just 18 days!) and what better way to share the joy of this with you than to have a little video unboxing! :(

For those of you living in a cave for the past few months, the P750 is one of Asus' latest and extremely well spec'd devices and is what could be considered the main rival to HTC's Tytn II (Kaiser). It has everything you'd expect from a modern Windows Mobile Professional device:

  • HSDPA
  • SiRF Star III GPS
  • Wi-Fi (b/g)
  • 3.0MP Camera (with Auto Focus)
  • 2.6" QVGA Touchscreen
  • Forward facing VGA video calling camera
  • 520Mhz Intel PXA270 CPU
  • 256MB ROM
  • 64MB RAM
  • External microSD slot
  • Smartphone-style keypad with backspace button
  • 1300 mAh battery

Thanks Alex - I'm thinking of buying a P750 so good to know someone who's been using it for a while with no particular gripes. Good to know the T9 works well. :D

However I do hope to use it as a satnav device and note that it doesn't come with any satnav software.

Do you run any satnav programmes on your device, or do you have any thoughts about satnav software compatitibility with the Asus?

Rod.

Yup, I use TomTom and Cameraware on the P750 and it works perfectly. The AGPS can also be set to automatically update when you connect the device to your computer via activesync.

NICE Alex - thx :D it looks so much nicer then the iPAQ!

Question:

Is it a real metalband around the phone? or plastic?

Does the Tomtom6 male/femalevoice - studder when navigating? and what version where you using? 6.032?

Thx in advance!

Thanks Alex - I'm wondering about CoPilot 7, but it's good to know that a standard TomTom package works on the device. Presumably you use TomTom 6.

I've never particularly been impressed with CoPilot - but then I've haven't tried v7 yet :D iGo 2008 is very nice btw.

Yep, real metal. Not heard the TT voice stutter at all and yep, on 6.032.

How is the sound when using BT headset?

It's quite good actually. No stutters, no skips. Slight background hiss though BUT I haven't been sent the latest rom yet :D

Looks like a nice little device. I think I'll be waiting to see what HTC has to offer over the next 6months to a year...

Now that it's looking like the SE Xperia X1 is delayed I am on the look out for other potentials.

OT:

Alex

Did you have a cold when you shot that? Sound a little under the weather/subdued.

I haven't seen any stylus, or a spare one.

Are there any????

Cheers

Just goes to show how well the device can be used without one :D Yes, it has a full size stylus but doesn't appear to have a spare.

awwww leave the Exec alone! :D

I happen to still use mine for satnav. It was a super device when it first came out!

Good review of the device. Pity it Orange or T-mobile haven't sunk their teeth into it. :(

So...P750 or i780?

:D

i780, like almost all sammy WM devices, is fugly :( Plus no full size stylus and is over £100 more expensive!

That extra £100 is a bit steep I know. The i780 has an extendable stylus, which is fine for normal use. Even unextended it's alright unless you want to do some writing (which defeats the object of having a full qwerty a bit!!). The main problem for me is the square screen. It's fine for normal use, but means you don't get very good widescreen video playback.

I do like the look of the p750 although I'm not sure about the joystick...and the HP 614c...and the Sony Ericsson X1 (mmmm!).

Thx for the vid.. I am almost sure that I will buy one as soon as they come out.

Question:

When you're typing a message on the P750 it looks like the phone can't keep up with the speed you're typing with and it therefore you almost can type in a complete word before it appears on the screen. In my everyday i'm typing a "bit" faster than you're doing on the video, and also i tend to send a fair amount of message's each day. Is it because your ROM version isn't the final or do you think that the final version can't keep up with normal (or a bit faster) typing either?

I've never had a smartphone/PDAphone before which is why I am comparing it to a normal mobilephone which off course can keep up with even a 13-year-old girl :D

I am hoping that the P750 can do the same.

Sorry for my rather bad english, but hope that you can help me with my question.

Thanks in advance.

I think that might just have been the video. I gave it a go just now to double check (typing as fast as possbile!!) and it didnt seem to have any problems :(

Great Video mate cheers for that.

Could you tell me if its possible to lock this phone to GSM only? (phone menu > band)

Just that the HP 614 seems to not have that function which has put me off somewhat.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Joost39. Nice to see you here. You know me as SBC :D

Haven't been keeping up with MS devices since the Nokia N95 revolutionized my world, and the TyTN II failed my expectations (slow, bad cam). But as most of you here surely know, Symbian seems to have committed suicide a few days ago by locking their smartphones to prevent the users from using free software, so it looks like the end of my S60 adventure.

The P750 looks very nice, although I think the screen could have been a bit larger. There certainly are space for it. Would you say this is the MS worlds answer to the Nokia N95 8GB or should I look elsewhere? A slider would be great, but for T9, not qwerty. Too big and unhandy. I most likely will be replacing my device by mid year...

The speed of TomTom is also important to me, because it seems to me like devices are getting slower, not faster. My HTC Magician ran TT like a dream, but since then the frame rate looks to be going down, for some reason. I have searched YouTube for vids of the P750 running TT but in vain. If the author of this article have the time, it could be rather interesting.
