HP iPAQ 614c Vs. Asus P750

Someone give me the sales pitch.... I want one... someone sell one to me...

I'm leaning to the iPAQ for the performance (128 Ram to 64MB). Concerns are build Quality (it looks like a flimsy plastic Outer casing), also the issues I've heard between swiitching from (I don't quite understand this part) 2G and 3G???

The Asus doesn't have a Jog dial, but has a jogstick... I like the ideas of being able to use the device with one had and I think that the Jog Dial makes it easier (correct me if I'm wrong...).

I'm looking for something for surfing the web, E-mail, and probably a bit of fun stuff games, music etc.

Kind Regards

MartinJT

HI MartinJT,

I have the same problem deciding.

Well, I owe the Asus P526 as a temporary phone, while I was waiting for one of these two to come on sale. Very happy with it, even though it's a basic phone.

I lean towards the HP, mainly because it's got 128Mb instead of 64, 2.8" instead of 2.6", and USB 2 instead of 1.

Asus is better in quality (I changed a lot of Windows phones), better package including a car holder, front camera for 3G video conferencing, and fantastic software specially the Travelog and GPS Courier. But I cannot go back to 2.6" and 64Mb. Have a look at this thread on this forum to help you on 614c (if you haven't found it yet):

h**p://www.modaco.com/content-page/261287/Questions-about-HP-IPAQ-610/page/80/ (put tt in place of the stars - I don't know if I'm allowed to give hyperlinks in t his forum).

610 is the same as the 614, depending on the region.

On the other hand, you can have a look at the coming Ericsson X1 Experia. Huge screen, qwerty keyboard, optical joystick, WM6.1, etc. Only problem is that you have to wait for a long time.

Hope I helped.

Regards,

Christisv

I'm trying to decide between those two devices as well.

The HP was my first choice to begin with due to the fact that I find it more stylish than the Asus.

It also got 128MB of ram versus the 64MB in the Asus and of course it's got a bigger screen.

Also, the virtual d-pad looks really interesting and exciting and seems to work well and is something not seen on any other device.

The deal-breaker for me regarding the HP is the connection problems when switching between 2G and 3G - this makes it absolutely useless for what it's actually meant to be.. a phone.

I've had problems with the connection on several other Windows Mobile phones in the past (all manufactured by HTC) and it is really one of the most annoying things in the world to be worrying about.

The network problem is pretty much the one reason why I prefer the Asus over the HP.

Another reason is th fat that it is quite huge in size and low speaker vlume due to stupid placement)

So if HP does not fix the problem with the connection before Asus can release a localized version here in Denmark I will be getting the P750 without a doubt. (where you can switch mode between 2G or 3G, and by choosing 2G you use less battery)

The downside og the P750 is the 64MB of ram but I've been told by nedge2k here on modaco that it does not have a negative impact on performance and read so on a few other forums, so I guess I could live with that.

Another negative thing is the joystick. I would much rather have a d-pad (or a virtual one like on the HP) but of course that is up to the user to decide.

A positive thing about the P750 is the hardware lock button which is really cool.

Other than that I find the HP and Asus pretty much equal.

To sum up the most important things:

HP:

+ 128MB RAM

+ Virtual D-Pad

- Network connections is broken

- Speaker volume is painfully low

- No front-facing camera (I don't need it anyway)

Asus:

+ Hardware lock

- 64MB RAM

- Joystick (D-Pad would be better)

I already know about the VGA, but does the 112/128MB memory upgrade require hardware modifications, or is it only a software mod like the VGA screen?

of course modification, instead of 2x32mb => 2x64mb.

same time made ROM w/o camera, means ca 30-31mb free RAm after reset, this helps to run IGO and similar "heavy" programs

What are the issues when using iGo with less memory? slow running, hangups?
