Hi everyone,

I thought I'd take the plunge and bought an Atom Life last week. I say last week, it was the week before that really, but DHL stole... erm, sorry, lost my phone TWICE so I had to re-order. Yes, twice it was sto.. lost. Anyway...

I am a very experienced Windows user but I'm a complete WM6 virgin, and I have some questions.

1. Are there a few must-have apps that I should download and install on the phone?

2. When I want to send somebody a text, do I always have to trawl though the list, with all my Outlook contacts at the top of it first? Can't I just get it to display phone numbers and not e-mail addresses when I want to text?

3. To edit my contact details (and remove the "/1" from the end of all of them, do I have to go into each one manually or is there some software on my PC I can do it much more quickly?

4. On a lot of the "theme" pages here I see at the top there's a big digital clock and some icons below it - not like the bog standard Today screen. How do I change it to that?

Thanks!

Good old DHL - they're making the Royal Mail seem saintly! :D

As for the questions, well...

1. 'Must have' apps well I would include a few:

* Resco Explorer/Photo Viewer - Much better that the bundled File Manager and Photo applications.

* Coreplayer - Plays almost everything audio/video related plus the latest version supports YouTube

* HTC Touch Keypad/Keyboard - not an official release and you'd have to search for it but it adds 12-key T9 and 20 key qwerty soft keyboards (a must for a device with no hardware keypad/keyboard)

3. Not quite sure what you mean by removing the '/1' from the end of your contacts? Can they not be edited on the PC in Outlook then synced over to your device?

4. I think what you are referring to is the HTC Home Plugin (from the HTC Touch range of devices). Again, not an official release but do a Google search and you'll find it - plus the HTC Home Customiser application.

As for question 2, if you choose 'New' in Messaging to create a blank text and select 'Add Recipient', does it not display a list of your contacts arranged by name?

When you are in Messaging/SMS and you select Menu/New, you can then start typing the contact name in the 'To' box and you will get a popup list of matches from where you can 'tap' the desired recipient.

I cancelled the DHL order and switched to Royal Mail and got it the next day. I love Royal Mail! :(

* Resco I have installed and will give the trial a go - thanks

* Coreplayer I've also installed and will try - thanks again

* With reagrds to the keyboard - the Atom Life has one built in - is it worth trying the HTC one, is it much better?

The "/1" bit appears at the end of all my Sim contacts. I've had to manually edit all the names so it's no big deal now.

I've downloaded the HTC Home plugin and installed it, but it looks as though it doesn't work on the Atom Life. Strange, I the site reckons it should word on "all" WM6 devices. Unless I've done something wrong? All the settings look on, the HTC menu is there and ticked, it just isn't there on my Today screen.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Yeah, that's the way I've been doing it, I just wondered if there was a quicker or more direct route. Thanks anyway.

Weird about the HTC Home plugin - I had it running fine on my Atom Life. At the risk of stating the obvious, have you tried a soft reset? :D Also, it must be installed onto the internal storage and not the memory card.

I've just done a soft reset (something else I've just learned!) but still no joy.

Internal storage is all I have, my 4GB miniSD is on order!

Weird though, if it worked on yours if must be something I am doing wrong. :D

Silly question, but how do I do a soft reset? Just turning it off and on? If so, I've tried that...

To soft reset your phone (make sure you've closed any applications you have open first) press the tiny reset button on the bottom of your phone with your stylus (next to the USB connector). Make sure you are not holding any buttons on the phone when you press the reset button. Also, at the risk of sounding obvious again, is the plugin enabled in your Today settings and at the top of the list?

Failing that, try uninstalling and reinstalling the plugin. Did you download it from the xda-developers forum by the way?

Tried uninstalling a reinstalling a few times now... I never downloaded it from xda-dev site no. I just have though, but I could only find v1.6 and the version I found on the other site was 2.1. Having said that, v.16 did show 5 icons on my Today screen, but no big digital clock. When I installed it it did tell me that it might not work properly as it was written for a different version of Windows (5 I expect). I am going to have another look on xda-dev to see if I can find a more recent version.

I also tried downloading the HHC (customiser thingy) as that downloads the plugin if it doesn't find it. It all looked great, the customiser downloaded the plugin, then showed me what it would all looked like. I clicked "OK" and then... nothing. Still the same old boring Today page :D

Right at the top of the list is "Date" and below that is "HTC Home".

I've tried moving "HTC Home" up and "Date" down, but neither is possible - the options don't light up.
