Take the pain out of WinMo WiFi with WeFi

A great feature of many Windows Mobile phones is the ability to connect via WiFi.

Particularly valuable if you don't have a flat rate data plan or if you are roaming, WiFi is supremely useful but - undoubtedly - something of a nightmare to use.

Case in point: When I was away on business recently my wife and daughter were on holiday in sunnier climes. My wife wanted to keep in touch with her mail etc. while she was away and she didn't want to spend a fortune on GPRS, so WiFi was an ideal solution. She uses a Touch Dual normally (non WiFi!) so I gave here an Eten X600 to take with her too (also handily loaded with navigation software for the hire car!) That was the easy part, the tricky part was explaining the intricacies and oddities of WinMo connection manager, all the different places the setup and settings live and so on. She's very Windows Mobile savvy, but it just is an AWFUL experience.

Enter WeFi.

At it's heart, WeFi eases this pain. It provides a single UI for turning WiFi on and off, discovering networks, determining which networks have internet access and automagically connect to the best one at any given time. It's a brilliant concept, and it works great... i've been testing it on my Pocket PC, my Mac and my WiFi's Vista laptop even!

WeFi also has some interesting social networking features built in, but I think the real gem for us Windows Mobile users is the simple connection management ability.

Best of all, WeFi is completely FREE, so why not head on over and grab a copy!

Does this software manage WEP keys itself? Sometimes my TytnII with plain WM6.0 forgets keys I use regularly and I have to re-enter them again for some reason. Would this software help fix that?

I tried this out, and after installing it my home WiFi connection would sometimes just not connect (wee tower icon with no arrows around it, like it wasn't even trying to connect). I don't know why this would happen, but I had to do a hard reset to get WiFi working properly again, and this program seems to have been the only culprit.

Has anyone else got this running on TLR's Kaiser CAB?

When i run it i get the error message ".NET framework 2 SP2 is required" Please download and install Wefi for windows mobile 5 through your PC".

(i have downloaded the WM 6 CAB...)

When i look in CA the version of .NET i am running is Compact Framework 3.5.7283.0

any ideas?

Cheers

At a guess, you could download the .net CF2 CAB and install that on your device, then use my .net cf config app to apply a 2.0 policy to the WeFi application?

This stupid program made me fear I had to HardReset my device:

After having dealt with its utter uselessness and geological startup times, I went to uninstall it - surprise surprise: my network adapter disappeared upon reboot, and re-rebooting it was no help...

Fortunately I had a registry backup, I imported it ... thanks god!

Seem to be a few problems with this software...just to add another to the list, I get the following message when trying to open the program

ERROR

An unexpected error has occurred in WeFi.exe. Select quit and then restart this program (which i've obviously tried), or select details for more information. (The details page shows the message below again as well as 'at Microsoft.AGL.Common.MISC.HandleAr() at System.Windows.Forms.MessageBox.Show() at WeFiEngine.CrashReport() at WeFi.WeFiApp.Main()'

An error message cannot be displayed becuase an optional resource assembly containing it cannot be found.

Anyone have any ideas? Maybe it's something i've done rather than the software..

Didn't work for me on my WM5 M3100. Sitting next to my WiFi router in kept trying (and failing) to connect to a neighbours open access point. When I told it to connect to mine it did, once, then dropped out and lost the WEP key. It then kept trying to connect to my access point and various neighbours, never once remembering my WEP key or actually connecting. Uninstalled.

all seemed ok til it started connecting to an unsecured network instead of my own so i deleted it.now this morning my vario 3 wont find my own network(as mentioned above the little tower shows)then i can get it to connect but i have to keep going into settings.iv put it back on to see if it auto connects and yes it does.seems like if i wanna use the com manager to connect to my wifi like before im going to have to do a hard reset.

I managed to install the PC version and the uninstall program just tries to re-install it again - how do I get rid of it?

I managed to uninstall it from my Athena as it just tried to connect to a neighbours unsecured network and not my secured one.

Hi all, my name is Galia and I work at the Support desk at WeFi. I'll try to answer you all, if you need to contact us please write to WeFi Support at [email protected]. Please keep in mind that the mobile version is still in beta phase so we're improving as we go.

stuart_f - WeFi does manage wep keys by itself so the information shouldn't disappear. It actually solves the original zero config bug you're talking about.

hamishmacdonald - I'm sorry but I don't have enough info to diagnose what happened but if you send us your model details to WeFi Support I could take it from there.

Shodowfixeruk - You can download the MSI file directly from here - http://www.wefi.com/download/client/WeFi.msi

It includes the .net compact framework 2, just install it on your pc and then sync your mobile up, you should be good to go.

thenext1 - It's not clear why this happened but if you send your model details to us I'll be glad to assist.

mstephenson - It seems that you have a Smartphone. Sorry but we aren't compatible yet. Check our site for details, we should have a compatible version out in a couple months. But just to let you know, with the next version release Smartphone users receive an incompatible notification, so this can be avoided.

T39andcounting - This is an old bug that we had already fixed so please try to install the latest version. However, we'll try to recreate the problem on your model phone in any case just to make sure.

nokiaguy - Your profiles seem to have been reset. Could you contact the support team so we may help you get it back asap. In any can I advise NOT to do a hard reset.

James - We do support WPA and WPA2. However it seems that you have an older versions of Windows Mobile OS and WPA2 isn't supported. To get your settings back to tthe way they were - press the Off button for about 7 - 10 seconds and then you'll be prompted to turn the device off.

leonxki – Same fix as James, just press the Off button for about 7 - 10 seconds and then you'll be prompted to turn the device off.

In any case if you need more assistance drop us a line.

Confucious - To make sure that you've removed it correctly please go to Start-> Settings -> on the System tab go to Remove Programs choose WeFi and click Remove.

Send an email to support if we can help with anything else.

transform – To turn off the automatic use of WeFi just go to the Options tab in WeFi and uncheck ‘Turn Wi-Fi when started’.

Thanks for supporting,

Hey Gfink, tusen takk for your pointers.

I have tried switching off the device twice. (Holding on for about 7-10 seconds, confirming the shutdown dialog). This procedure does not however reset the WiFi adapter to defaults. I still cannot connect to any networks. They are definitely visible as my eeepc can see them (size of antenna considered). Also I have played with an ad hoc network between my eeepc and the Atom_Life before, and now my Atom_Life cannot detect the network.

Anything else I can do?

Thanks again,

Leon.

since I've installed this, my Tytn I doesn't remember it's wep/wpa keys, which means I have to type them in again. Even installed and registered Devicescape but that doesn't work either. Also at home , my phone would always connected me to my home network. Doesn't now, just gives me a list of available access points, then I have to type in the wep key again.

This apps has ruined my wifi setup. Very disappointing, but that's what you get when you try a beta. I'll wait for the next WM6 reinstall before getting rid of this package :D

Err, YES is does. as you can see from my profile text im using an Eten X800 with WM6.. My WiFi was working fine with no problems, i then installed your software and it would no longer connect, i tried truning it off and uninstalling it but then my phone would no longer look for WiFi networks. 1 x Hard Reset and install everything again and now its back to normal.

I dont think ill risk installing this again and certainly wont be reccomending it to anyone. :/
