Kaiser suddenly got very old!!

When I got my Kaiser I felt it was the most state of the art phone available. It was bang up to date, packed with technology and gadgets and even looked pretty cool! Is it just me or since the release of all these new HTC Touch handsets (diamond in particular) and the Apple iPhone 2.0 the Kaiser is suddenly out of date, nasty looking, clumsy, bulky and slow in comparison?

I'm stuck on an 18 month contract with a Vario III and I'm absolutely gutted. The only thing the Kaiser has over any of these is the slide out keyboard, and that is a flop in my opinion. Dodgey keys sometimes, awkward to use etc. I prefer using the ZoomBoard on screen most of the time!

Only another 10 months to wait till I upgrade!!! Yippee!!!

I'm regretting getting an 18-month contract, but I dont consider the tytn ii old just yet - it still compares very well to the new devices, the only difference between it and the raphael (its replacement) that i can see is touchflo, a slightly faster processor, and the vga screen.

I won't start to consider the tytn ii as even starting to age until at least the raphael comes out, but I imagine around january (12 months into my contract) I may be ebaying around for a raphael...

If you want to breathe some more life into the tytn, I would highly reccomend a hard reset and starting again with all the programs you install - this does make a big difference in how the software feels (speed, responsiveness, etc.), and gives you a chance to upgrade everything at the same time.

LOL. So the iPhone is released with 3G, SatNav, and a couple of other improvements, i.e., bringing it up to a par with the 12-month-old Kaiser, and suddenly it feels old?

Well the graphics certainly make it feel antiquated, as well as the better touch interface.

Hopefully that will be corrected soon though!

I can say this because I only have a few months left on my 12 month contract (sorry) but yes, the Kaiser's definitely showing its age. It's partly that tired old WM interface, and partly that poor driver support which makes the very least of its QVGA screen, in an age where slick VGA graphics are becoming the norm for this kind of phone. And let's face it, the styling and keyboard etc were never exactly cutting edge - although that tilting screen is still unique, and likely to remain so.

I'm veering more and more towards the Iphone to be honest. The functionality isn't quite there still, but it's gotten a lot closer, and the design and interface was light years ahead even last year. It's still way ahead of the Diamond etc now.

Hey, nobody's suggesting that WM isn't a shite GUI. MS seriously need to catch up (although Android may get there first).

I won't be moving to iPhone until they support cut'n'paste and have a proper keyboard. So, erm, never, then. :D :D

Never say never! Apple are on record about copy and paste being in their to-do list, and the Register posted an article a little while ago about a possible keyboarded prototype doing the rounds for user testing. Lets face it, if they're serious about pushing the Iphone/OSX as a mobile platform, even Apple know they need more than one model in their range - one size never fits all.

Still, they have a way to go in other areas. Underneath that shiny UI, there's still a lot of functionality that's just not there, and this time around there are bugs and core stability problems being reported with the 3G's 2.0 firmware, so all is not so perfect in Apple land.

It's a shame WM6, like previous versions, needs so many tweaks and 3rd party software to make it usable :D

I remember getting WM2003 on my iPaq and thinking, wow this is pretty damn bare. Then I spent a small fortune buying software for it!

I think a lot of it is down to the operating system and down to how good the software different manufacturers create support the main operating system.

Err.... dont believe the iPhone is SatNav yet.... Googlemaps works with the GPS. Reading a booklet, makes no mention of SatNav, unless a manufacturer is going to allow one to be used on the iPhone or a developer?

Please correct me if I am wrong.

I for one had the TYTN II SIM FREE from HTC. Do I regret it? not at all! For me , its a business tool, and does everything I want, including Tom Tom !

Should have gone SIM FREE. I got the TYTN II from the Modoco / Expansys offer pack, and do not regret it. I think it was around late September it arrived, and even now, its heavily used.

In fact, I upgraded to 6.1, and bar a few issues with SMS, it still works well.

For the fact of having GPS/TomTom was a bonus, and the Wireless connectivity. For Remote Desktop, its great, and replaced my old Sony Laptop already.

not sure I agree with the comments about out of date, nasty, clumsy and bulkty. Compare to my old XDA EXEC, yes 100% agree! But comparing against a new "moderm" phone, like the iPhone, then its no real comparison.

But you spend your money, and make your choice. I chose NOT to go contract route.... dont regret it one bit.

Again, not tied to a contract frees me to do what I like. Yes, you may pay more, but whats the cost of the contract? Plus my provider does DATA usage unlimited and 1000 mins / 1000 text for £49.99! Cannot complain.

Agree that breathing new life into the TYTN would be a hard reset, or even better WM6.1 plus apps reinstalls or latest updates may help.

Maybe WM7 may help improve things, but I do agree, MS definetely need to play catch up big time! Especially with the RIM, not just the iPhone.

To me, iPhone is more of a gimmick. We have someone with one in the office, who queued up like a moran to get it.... and now the 3G version is out, he is tied to it! He can of course change, but gets tied again to a NEW 18 month contract, and now feels ripped off!

Each phone has its own functionaility and potential. Each to their own personal taste

BANG ON! You need to use 3rd party apps to make things "better". Like you my ipaq was, and still is very much usable !! Its great for the kids and they love it! But paying OTT for the software was a bit of a mistake, so I try and keep things as clean and simple as possible.

TYTN II HTC branded home screen is ok, and I have only installed a small amount of apps to help run my business. I am not into music or videos in any big way. But if I want a tune, I can use 3G and listen to radio over the net. And that works well for me.

Remember, the iPhone was "locked"... its only recently that developers have the potential to create their own custom apps / open source programs. Good thing for iPhone users :D

Maybe not so good for people tied to an 18 months contract looking for a change

Iphone users can download Iphone 2.0 software free of charge so he can download the apps etc without a new contract...

The fact that he could get a free iphone 3g if he did sign up for a new contract would sway it for me - especially as he could sell his iphone 1 on ebay.

correct, as stated above, the iPhone was locked. Now its not (v2 free to original and default 2.0 on 3G phones), its not a problem now.

Yes, you could sell it, not sure you would get much for it now. One would guess you can buy a 3G model sim free or perhaps unlocked well by now. (not looked yet as eBay blocked here).

End of the day, each to their own.... we all have a preferance, otherwise there would not be such a large market for a wide audience.

I've been falling in and out of love with the Iphone over the last few weeks, the interface is very nice and it's a great piece of design, but at the end of the day there's just too many reasons to come back to my trusty Kaiser. After 9 months it does look old, but deep down it's still a youngster, with a long list of cutting edge features that the slightly vacant Iphone can't touch.

I can change up to anything I like in a couple of month's time, and will most likely go to a Touch Pro or similar, but it will only be a largely cosmetic upgrade to the Tytn II - while the Iphone, despite being a cosmetic leap forward, is a downgrade in most over respects.

I think i'm totally in agreement with that. The iPhone is a great phone, I don't theres theres anything to deny that. Its just that despite being brilliant to use and having a good gui, its still just too restrictive.

There are just too many things that I can do on my kaiser that the iPhone can't, and I don't think you reallise just how much you do something/need to be able to do it unless you cant.
