G1 - my first thoughts.

Ramblings / thought in approximate order from opening....

Tiny box.

mmmmm shiny.

Standard new-style HTC mains adapter. Cool. But I check the part numbers just in case so it don't fry on a UK HTC adapter... ( a-la ipaq / XDA dongle HTC sillyness)

Crap carry pouch thing.

Can't get the back off at first. Open the keyboard, hook nail through obvious slot, pull down and to the right. Fiddly.

Battery area reminds me of my t-mobile US wing( herald). Dunno why. Same black plasticy look?

USB cover is the same rubberised plastic-y as the back cover, similar to that on some recent HTC devices ( s620, s710) but slightly harder feel.

Trackball device looks and feels dirty or rough even when brand new.

Slimmer than I thought, angled keypad not that noticable / annoying.

Seems to staticly attract a disproportinate amount of dust ( black version).

Build quality is so-so. Unit has a HT seriel so was expecting better but the gap between screen hinge and keyboard is not uniform. May be related to black version 'noise' issues?

Comes with a 1gb 'Trancend' microd SD card installed. micro SD slot is fiddly and feels very stiff. Can't easily insert / eject the micro cards without use of a sim etc. Must stop biting nails.

Cute little robot pic on startup.

No I don't want a google account.

No, I DON'T want a google account!

OK I want a google account....( goes off to find all the decent gmail acount names are gone...)

What's that? I don't have enough credit on my PAYG sim to connect to the google server? AAAAAARRRGGGHHHH

More thoughts tomorrow once I can actually get into the O.S....

I think you'll need to borrow a t-mobile sim. If it's a fresh new phone ( i.e unregistered) it will need to connect to google to authenticate the gmail account you use - even unlocked you can't get past this screen to change the APN etc until it's authenticated, for which would need a t-mobile sim. Of course, I'm assuming as it works on t-mob UK it will have the UK APN there. Hope so...

Haha, nice... think you've cemented my desire for a white one...

P

Didn't take much. :D

Was it the 'mmmmmm, shiny' comment?

Need to get a top up on my way to work to try and get this configured. Hope there is a generic firmware sometime soon....want to be bored of this before the S740 is released.

Right, topped up a UK PAYG sim and able to complete setup fine. Looks very like an iphone front screen......icon arrangement, large clock etc.

Prefer this hardware to my 2g iphone.

Check the current listed APN's and it has pretty much every major t-mobile network listed inc. A, CZ, NL, D, and about 20 different US ones, I assume due to the fragmented nature of the underlying US network made from older acquired cellco's.

Using it via wifi at the moment. I've got firmware 1.0 with an RC19 build so looks like I'll be updating using the microSD method.

Worked on 3G first time. As the app store won't work over wifi ( boo hiss) it's more like £G on PAYG....

I like the actual handset, the O.S is a bit 'me too' iphone esq. I'm sure all the hax0rs love it's open-source goodness etc but that means little to me and it just doesn't give me the feeling it's polished enough for everyday use. Sadly this G1's life will probably consist of being leant around various collegues / friends, then living in a drawer until someone at XDA-devs ports windows mobile to it. Shame. :-(
