Finally progress.  After switching off both Firewall and Virus checker my XP PC can see the phone.  Fairly simple I know, but I had no obvious threat warning displayed in screen from Symantec and no-one (and I include Orange and various news groups here) has suggested this one.  Just in time as well as I was giving it this evening before taking it back. :oops:
