Hi All,

Currently running Khunchais 23001 UltraLite rom; experience the same problem with MANY roms so don't think it's ROM related.

I think I seem to have too many programs installed, as TouchFLO 2D and/or SPB Mobile Shell constantly closes and returns to Today screen after opening other programs, like Messaging, Opera, File Explorer etc. Also, will often receive error at startup saying "couldnt open etc (plasma.exe fingermsg.exe) as memory may be unavail or something, close through task manager then restart program" which often causes the phone to lockup and not start.

I've installed programs to both the device, my storage, and combination of both. Error still occurs. Seems to be when the avail memory drops to a bit under 50MB.

1. Does anyone else have the same problems (programs closing / not starting correctly / running slow) when memory is low?

2. If I cooked my own ROM with the software I use, would the "startup resident software" (that I suspect is dropping the main memory too low - like Inesoft Address Book, Fingersuite, Guardmobile, SPB MS3/TouchFlo, AP Button Plus, MS Voice Command etc) use less RAM?

Many thanks,

Clem

Have slowly installed apps and the error does only seem to occur after a certain amount of software is installed, particularly the startup software, which is why I think it's related to the RAM. I would've assumed 50MB free RAM would be sufficient though I may be wrong.

Are other people comfortably using their phone with this amount of free RAM?

Does anyone know if SK Tools "Optimise" feature (say reliable or high memory option) makes a difference, as it doesn't seem to help with this issue.

Here is most of the software I usually install:
TouchFLO and / or Mobile Shell (not at same time, but error occurs with both shells)
Inesoft Address Book
MS Voice Command
Opera
Samsung Keyboards
Fingersuite
Wisbar Advance
AE Button Plus
AM Music ID
Audio Notes Touch
CorePlayer
Favourite Settings
G-Alarm
GuardMobile
HiCalc
IGO 8
SKTools
Resco Explorer
SPB Wallet
SKTSync
WunderRadio
Youtubeplay

Am I expecting too much from the phone?

Well I know on my omnia I can not run both Touch flo 2d and mobile shell together.
Just not enough memory to do this!!!  Maybe if they were the only two apps installed I would have a chance but I have a list as long if not longer than yours in the apps department!!

Regards Brendan

Thanks Brendan,

Yeah, TouchFlo and Mobile Shell aren't running together. I tried TouchFlo after my Mobile Shell would keep exiting back to the homescreen and closing apps on me. I thought it was the error some people are getting with MS3, as discussed on the SPB Club forum (86 posts, highest on the site, and no official response from SPB).

Unfortunately, same thing happens with TouchFlo, after installing quite a few programs. I've installed them one by one, and different programs seem to do it; only constant is that it does it when free RAM seems to drop below 60MB or so.

Brendan - do you get any probs like I outlined with the apps you have installed? What does your free RAM sit at after you'e opened and/or closed a few apps?

sounds like the page pool..

I am going to stop using page pool mod...I dont think the Omnia can stand up to it. At the moment i am running 6mb...not had any shutdowns or apps closing etc, but i cannot get hotmail to work...

I may try again tonight......build a normal ROM with no page pool mod.

Thanks for the reply.

Not sure if it's just a pagepool issue as I have used older ROMs (like your earlier WM6.5 versions) and the problem was still there. I'll keep playing around with it and see how it goes, perhaps there is a compatibility issue between some programs as others seem to have a few installed with no probs.

If I flash my own ROM with most apps in the ROM, would the avail RAM be higher compared to installing them as CABs? Do the efficiency improvements translate to RAM usage as well as decreased storage mem use?

Many thanks,

Clem

I have never heard of the Mobile Shell problem that your talking about, my MS 3.0 runs very well.
My free ram when nothing opened sits at around 60mb and when 3 or 4 apps opened sits at around 49mb depending on the apps.
And I used to have Touch Flo running well also before I switched to Mobile Shell.

Thanks mate, my RAM sits a similar level however with the problems I outlined. Well this gives me hope then that it's prob not memory based, perhaps page pool / perhaps some incompatibility somewhere. Brendan, you're apps have been installed as CABS for the most part, not cooked into your ROM?

Cheers

Bump and What The badword?? This has been an issue for me for ages, and it's frustrating. I use MS Reader a lot, and whenever I respond to a Text message, it closes. TouchFlo constantly closes on me, and I need to wait for it to reload. I only install MS Reader, PhoneEx, Skyfire and..... That's it, I think. I'm currently using Shokka's latest ROM.

How can no one address this? It's one of the main reasons I wish people were still cooking decent 6.1 ROMS. I'll post a video soon of it in action.

Edit - Video uploaded. Apparantly MyMobiler has terrible quality, but I actually caught it in action this time. Notice when I go to open the Showcase, TouchFlo dies? And it appears the magic number is 50mb for the RAM.

Re-Edit - No harassment based on the content of my txt messages permitted :-P lol.

I have used s0cks 6.1 ROM and it's very nice. All of the crashes on my phone are somewhat related to ActiveSync and Home2. (Apparently they don't get along well) Anyways, I haven't had any problems with it other than normal Windows crashes. I don't have things close due to lack of memory, in fact, I'm sure I've never run out of memory while multi-tasking on my phone. Yet! At least try his ROM, because I found Windows Mobile 6.5 to be too cluttered and too un-stable to use. Originally I used 6.5 but just went back to 6.1.

Hi,
I have tested your last ROM and i'm suffering the auto-kill problem. I usually change M2D theme to one that i think is using more memory (bigger images), besides i use Inesoft Phone (keeps resident on memory), GAlarm (also), S2U2 (iLock is always there), Rotation Service and Touchpal, so my base memory usage rises to 46-47% and this make ROM almost unusable since 50-55% triggers the problem. Ssometimes i cant even open Resco Explorer that inmediately closes or even Messaging pop-ups to check email and auto-kill closes S2U2 and this is a very nasty side effect when Omnia is in the pocket :)

I am back to Khuanchai 23001 3-in-1 (8MB pagepool) and this problem is gone, i can rise memory usage to 90% with no problem....

My theory is that after 23001 Msoft included/enabled/modified  this feature to prevent memory starvation and maybe is not well ported to Omnia, and feature thinks that memory is critically down when is not.....Can someone else try to check this theory?. Would be nice if someone that says that it has no problem of this kind trying to open 5 or 6 memory hunger applocations (Opera with a newpaper web with lot of photos and flash, Internet Explorer with the same newspaper web, Google Maps, Live Search) and try to rise memory usage to 90%....

    Regards,
         Zymmer
