Hello, I've been reading through the forum threads to learn more about my first Smartphone and it's been very informative. The one main thing that continues to confuse me is if there is any way to us our now unlocked GPS without having to use aGPS, Data Plans, Bluetooth, Internet access, etc.

I am currently serving in Afghanistan and my wife thought that since I get a kick out of computers and gadgets I could have some fun with this phone. If I can find a way to just use the GPS chip in the phone to get satallite tracking it would be a huge start to what I would want to do when I get back to the states.

Just Longitude/Latitude would be great for now and then I could load something like Garmin's XT for mobiles with the maps that I need for places want.

Any help here just to clarify would be much appreciated. I can't seem to discern whether you can or cannot use any GPS software with our phones without having to use the above mentioned.

You can use stand alone GPS on this phone. You will need to leave the phone radio on but it does not need a data connection nor a signal from a carrier. It will use more power this way because the phone is looking for a signal but it will work.

You can use the attached cab to get lat and long with no maps.

You will probably need to wait for a bit while the GPS acquires satellites as every one usually does.

Thank you Blazingwolf. I have been reading your thread on the cooked rom you have Neo 1.2 I think it is. Once I get through a few more things I think I'm going to play with your rom and see what it's all about.

I downloaded BAF GPS Toggle to turn on and off the GPS from reading some posts. I know about turning on the Location option and letting windows manage but do I need the BFT to us this item you have helped me with?

I'm going to give it a try and post later. Thanks alot.

Edit: Radio won't stay on with.....yup installed to check if the FM Radio would stay on without the headset connector in and no dice. I'm going to try and see what I get anyways for SNG's. I don't know if this littl program turns on the radio in some way on it's own but guess I'll see. Any Radio recommendations? I think I remember Nitrogen mentioned somewhere? Well I'll browse the threads again. Thanks again.

No, you don't "need" toggle to use GPS viewer. Toggle will establish a lock and then keep it so that your GPS programs get a lock faster. It's a nice program and I never had issues with it killing my battery bit some say they did.

Earlier when I mentioned radio I was talking about the phone radio which is different than the FM Radio. The phone radio is what makes your device work as a phone because it connects to the wireless network. The FM radio is for pulling in FM radio broadcasts. It will stay on if you use the radio antenna that was included with the phone (unless you don't have it cause the phone was used or your wife didn't send it). This is a long cable that connects to your phone and then allows you to plug in 3.5 mm headphones.

Nitrogen is a media player that can play MP3, OGG and other types of media. It's very good at what it does though. :)

Thank you very much. So just leave the phone enable is the deal. I do have the cable for the FM radio but didn't want to have that hanging out when I was getting a location lock.

Well I'm going to go ahead and hang out outside for a couple of hours and see if I can get any sats around here to lock in. I appreciate your prompt responses and notice it as well in your thread for the ROM you have cooked up for this latest Verizon update. Gonna take a peak at your work in a few days after I read up some more on it to make sure I'm not bugging you about mundane operator errors.

First of all, I want to thank you for your service to our country. It is appreciated.

You may also want to take a look at Beeline GPS, www.visualgps.net

Very easy to use, provides a ton of GPS info, and allows you to easily manage your own waypoints.

Cheers,

Peter

No problem. :)

Hopefully the GPS will work well for you.

Take care of yourself over there.

@Peter Brauer thanks for the compliment and I appreciate the mention of another GPS to try out. Not going to use my phone as my main GPS out here but here there are never to many backup plans, lol.

@Blazingwolf: The GPS did work so that was step one. Now i'm going to try the one Peter Brauer mentioned to see how much more information it has and I like to take significant steps in new areas so I'm going to see about flashing to your latest ROM.

Hi BW,

I saw that you are the one who expert with Omnia I910. :D

I have an I910 in my hand right now, and also already unlock to use carrier in my country (not VZW), already upgrade to CF03.

I need to know, did my phone GPS unlocked after upgrade new ROM (CF03)?

I want to use GPS application to this phone, but I didn't see that my phone receive signal from satellite, even my phone still "acquiring better GPS" or "searching for satellites". My phone also already setting GPS to ON posisition. but still same. :D

What actually my phone need? and can we use the GPS from this phone even we not connecting to internet?

Thank you v'much.
