- Toshiba (and in France Orange) interface(s) sucks ? : change it (or wait for WM65 update) ! There are plenty of GUI and many free ones !
- CPU 1GHz in unusefull ? : how do you think it can handle such high quality videos resolutions ? Also try to browse Windows directory on ANY other PDA and check back your TG01 Try to access large databases and check...
- plastic quality is bad ? : no, I don't think so. But the USB trap is a non-sense...
- camera quality is bad ? : well, that's a PDA not a real camera ! it's not made to produce quality photos ! not in a 9.9mm thick device !
- battery is bad : YES ! I do agree... but, once again, I doubt you can place a 2000mAh battery in a 9.9mm thick device !
- need a WM 6.5 rom ? : wait a few weeks and you'll get it !
- need a device wich can hold custom roms : resell your TG01 and buy a HTC ! Or wait 'til someone find how to do it (maybe after WM6.5 update)
- random reboots : YES ! this is VERY annoying ! Let's hope this will be adressed in the WM6.5 release
- Bt and Wifi together : works on mine...
- audio quality is bad ? : Yes but it's the wired headphones and inside earphone wich are bad... I have NO PROBLEM with a Bt headset ! And with a device with that form factor it is ridiculous to phone without a proper headset...
- listening audio while charging : no problem with a Bt headset ! HTC Diamond had the same issue and a 3rd party accessory fixed this ! This device is new and not as sold as HTC usually does so wait and see...
- G-sensor : as it has previously been said this is a new chipset so let the devs adapt there apps to support it But as next HTC device will be based on the same chipset (Snapdragon) there will be updates
- do I feel ridiculous with this device ? : NO NO NO !!! Every single person I show it to is amazed (except som iPhone terrorists but their opinion is biaised)

I only use this phone for communication(make phone call, send & receive SMS, get on internet, use some applications). But I like it, I like the huge screen, it make me feel comfortable when I am operating. That's the only reason for me to purchase a mobile phone with huge screen. As I said, you can buy it just because you like it not for other reasons, and you can also abandon it if you don't like it anymore. 


What I mean is different user have different purpose, gmx333 feel disappointed because he(she) don't like it, that's normal and no necessary to judge the phone and the engineers are good or bad.

Since when has file corruption been a matter of personal taste? In what possible scenario could the device cutting out after displaying 80% battery life be a matter of personal preference??  How exactly can communication be enhanced by cutting the last syllable from ever word you say?  Why does having a lovely big screen excuse unreliability?

I think you misunderstood the complaints here.  We are talking about faults, not features.  For example, I cannot use this 'phone' as a phone, because on the few times I can hear it's pathetically quiet ring tone in order to answer it, the person on the other end of the line complains that they can't hear me properly and that my voice cuts out at the end of each sentence.  I cannot use it reliably as a media device because it's internal memory is not big enough for a decent movie file and there is no guarantee that any file I put on the memory card will still be there when I go to open it.  I cannot expect to be able to use it for mobile internet because the battery is likely to have run out by the time find the page I want, and I can't use it a paperweight because it's too damn light.

My previous phone (HTC TYTN II) had exactly the same operating system, a 400mhz made by the same company, (less than half the power), no graphics drivers, and the same third party software.  I never had any of the random reboots, slowdowns, battery cut-outs or the card corruption problems I have with the TG01.  My friends could actually hear my talk to them and my phone told me exactly how much battery life I really had, rather than making me guess.  

It is very nice for you that you can put up with these problems, but I paid money for a phone I can use.  I did not pay to be a beta tester for engineers who are too lazy to test their software in real-life situations.

After losing all my files last Tuesday, I got a replacement which then had to be reset several times in the first day as it started to slow down for no apparent reason, even before I installed any other applications.  (I am talking about slowdowns that look like system freezes, not just a lack of patience).  Both units had a fault with the battery where it would cut out despite reporting 80% battery life.  I lost my data on my memory card for no apparent reason today (again).  I had no other apps installed and nothing running off the card.  It wasn't even the cheap Toshiba card that others have blamed this problem on, but a high quality class 6 card.

I wish I could love this phone, I really do.  It has some great features, but most of them are, quite literally, broken.

I have almost none of the problems you refer to... except the bad battery life. No more card corruption (I use 4 different microSD cards) since that I formatted from the one provided by Toshiba from a PC connected USB Drive, my phone conversations are fine and I can use it to view videos in the train or listen to MP3 as I can cope with the bad battery life either by recharging when I'm at work or at home or using an external battery...

I hope we'll soon get hi-power batteries available outside Japan...

Ringtone volume is not a problem to me as it is always on vibration mode or I have the a (bluetooth) headset connected.
Random reboots are the main proble I'm facing !
I do sincerely hope that WinMo 6.5 will adress most of the troubles...

I can understand people who cannot rely on their TG01 but all that I say is that I have not really a lot of problems...

QualComm SnapDragon is a brand new chipset configuration and unfortunately Toshiba rushed to sell it before HTC does. And every new hardware have "youth" problems. Let's expect that QualComm and Toshiba correct those problems...

The fact is that when I bought the TG01, I was quite aware, this device being the very first of a new platform, it would be muuuch less reliable than my previous samsung Omnia, and would require many settings and fixes to get advantages from its huge power.
(to be really honnest, I bought it because I definitly wanted to see FpseCE 0.10 running on it)

And the problem is that in many countries, it was sold as a traditional "phone", a ready to use "iphone killer", etc!
BUT IT IS NOT!

People should be aware of this, you can have the ultimate device with the TG01, but it takes time, it's almost experimental (and I personaly love it!!! lol)

Anyway, most of the bugs you mention can now be fixed (when you buy an HTC, you know you'll find every fix and everything in a few minutes, deve. on the TG01 is at its very beginning and will never go sa far! Once more: new architecture = things to improve)
-Memory card corruption: as long as you have some, make hard resets. Always close every running task on the TG01 before plugging it via USB (especially the file explorer!) and don't let it go "asleep" when connected. Doing this is not an officially working solution but is working for some, including me.

-Battery problems: try using the TG01 as you would use a laptop: minimum power when just waiting for possible incoming calls in your pocket, medium power when you want usuall application to run fast and smooth, high power only for 3D games or big videos.  By doing this, my battery lasts 3 days (about 40 minutes high usage a day)

-Unwanted reboots? Have you SRS WOW on your device? See the other post. They always come from 3rd party applications, hard reset will fix it

-Bad sound quality during calls? If it is REALLY bad, ask for a replacement, some in France had this problem on their 1st TG01 (words being cut, parasites sounds...) it was a hardware problem.  If the problem is the volume during calls, some registry changes help improving it (see other posts in the forum)

-Incoming-calls rings to low remains a problem, especially with the speaker in the back. I've placed some MP3 especially for this whose volume has been increased with a PC application.

-The camera quality: with such a thin device, it was not possible to have an excellent one, but right, the interface is too minimalist. At least, the bitrate of the recorded videos is good, much better than on my Omnia.

I know it's a big work to get something that will never be as reliable as an HTC or a Samsung, but the TG01 and its huge power deserve it.

i have had the world on my tg01.......... mobishell 3.0 with sense ui and tf3d. mobishell turns this phone to a somewhat acceptable everyday tool. been working away and have used 4 solid days straight. its been my sole phone, web browser and alarm clock. the phone is scary fast people i mean lightning! true web browsing on the large 4.1 inch screeen. charged it every night before bed and it held out all the next day. battery life is really bad but with wm6.5 coming we might ghet new rilphone.dll which may improve battery life. i was gonna get the HTC Hero but with the Leo announced with still slower processor than TG01 i may just stick it out with this phone. we may never get HDSPL on this phone so custom roms will be a no no. gold card method is not secure so i will not risk this phone by using it

The Leo has the same 1GHz processor as the TG01. It also has a larger capacitive multitouch screen, a bigger battery, more RAM and a smaller overall size.

Unless Toshiba sort out some of their problems, I may well be tempted

Slower processor for the Leo ? No ! It will use the same as the TG01 : QualComm MSM 8250 SnapDragon 1GHz. So it will also have the same chipsets for sound, video, phone, Bt and Wifi as all is embeded in the SnapDragon chipset !

And  the Leo will have a 4.3" capacitive multitouch screen were TG01 as "only" 4.1" resistive single touch !!!

yeah bouble checked the spec and you guys are right! seen the video showing multitouch in action so i say i will defo get the Leo. the resistive touch screen is too freiking moody and i just can't type a text without either deleting some text or keyboard going off screen. it is horrible to use seriously. finger keyboard 2.1 remedies it a little bit but that touch screen is not good at all

but unless HTC finally produces a phone with USB host enabled, this phone is of no use to me. That's a requirement in my work, now. TG01 has it. I doubt HTC will come though (I hope they do, but history is not on their side).

I have an iphone 3gs and its very good but its just so boring and has limitations. My tg01 has character! Yes i have SOME issues as mentioned here. If my phone rings, its the iphone, and will be until a reliable and trusted fix for the volume comes out that is simple enough for me to install. If i wanna browse the net, watch movies, look at software, play games or just tinker its always the tg01. Having the tg01 is good for the soul!

Hope this is true, i'm locked into an 18 month contract, so no chance of an upgrade for a while. Got the TG01 for free though

The only difference is that my reliable device is my good old Samsung Omnia

Forgive me, but you are speaking utter nonsense.

I realise you were trying to help, but I think your reply was a bit patronising.  You were basically calling me naive, suggesting that I didn't know what I was buying or doing.

I've used Windows Mobile since it appeared as Windows CE 1.0 in the late 1990s, I'm fully aware of what this device can do and have been more than willing to endure the odd annoyance in return for the productivity these devices provde me.  Every phone I've had since 2003 has been Windows Mobile.  I can put up with a lot.

However, I am already on my FOURTH replacement TG01 (an average of one every two weeks!), and I am still unable to access that elusive "huge power" you speak of due to the fact that it is, yet again, taking me 10 seconds to open the settings menu for no apparent reason.  Granted, this is not happening all the time, just when it is plugged in.  All three TG01 units I had previously gave me corrupt files and inexplicable slowdowns.  All of them had problems with the Battery meter.  I've only experienced one phone as bad as this and that was the HTC Polaris, which was duely fixed.  If the WM 6.5 update doesn't fix it, it'll be going back to Orange and I'll be getting something else.

By the way, contrary to your assumptions, my last lot of memory corruptions and unwanted reboots happened with no 3rd party apps installed, so as far as I can see, these could only be faults in the stock ROM, or perhaps with the snapdragon itself.  Either way, it shoud never have reached the market in this state.

It is beyond my understanding how you can defend a device with this many faults.  If, as you say, you have been experiencing these faults and somehow think it is acceptable for a manufacturer to screw you like this, you are doing us no favours at all by not complaining about it to Toshiba and your service provider.

To say that the TG01 isn't a 'phone' is also utter nonsense.  If it worked, it would easily be the best phone on the market.  But it doesn't actually work.  It's broken.  No human being can use a 'phone', and even less a high-powered PDA, if it corrupts the memory card so often.

By the way, Toshiba, if you are reading this, any chance of an official public statement in response to these concerns?

It's your fourth replacement? How long have you been trying to fix the problems before changing your TG01 every time???
It took me something like 3 weeks to fix all the problems (but the sound, I don't want to use SRS wow anymore, too many problems with it) and have something working "normaly"

Or is your provider replacing your TG01 every time with one coming from the same shitty and bugged TG01 stock?????

Anyway, your case is true, I believe you, but you're the only one I've ever seen with 4 replacements and so many difficulties

You may be happy to accept the bugs and do your hard resets for the sake of bleeding edge technology.  Unlike you, I don't think that is a virtue.  There is a world of difference between tweaking and having to fix a broken machine.

I didn't deny that many users haven't (yet) had problems, but I have to admit, looking at these boards, it is becoming apparent that I am far from alone, especially since you admit you have had problems yourself.  The TG01 has not been out for very long, and the fact you may not have had a problem 'yet' (since your hard resets which you shouldn't have had to do in the first place) does not give you reason to be complacent.  Just because you have not had problems recently doesn't mean they have gone away, so I'd keep doing those backups if I were you.  There have been a few people on these board saying they've fixed their problem, only to come back a week later saying that their problem has come back.  It's too early for you to dismiss the possibility that all phones might be affected.

By the way, you may not have noticed I am not the person who started this thread  That makes at least two of us.  There is also at least one other person on this board who was on his third replacement.  Including yourself, that's at least four.  The longest thread on this board is the one about card corruption.  Then there are other forums with similar complaints about the TG01.  I am beginning to think that this is not a coincidence.

For your information, I spent 6 weeks trying to fix my first one.  (Once again, why should I have to??)  I said I had an average of one every two weeks, which is not the same as saying that I actually had one every two weeks.  I have no shame in sending it back as many times as is necessary for my service provider to notice there is a problem with these phones.

And yes, you are probably quite correct about my provider, but then I've a feeling all the stock might be buggy.

Anyway, rant over.  Please don't take any of this personally.  I'm still very fed up with this phone.  I need it to be reliable.

There is no doubt that the TG01 has some major flaws- some of these are critical to some users and some to other users. We can only hope that there will (soon) be  some fixes.

In the meantime, we should keep reporting our experiences and hopefully any workarounds. We are a little unfortunate that the XDA-Developers community only really supports HTC devices- had that not been so, I'm sure some fixes would already be apparent.  As such we are at the mercy of Toshibha/Microsoft/Qualcomm to sort out what is Hardware, Firmware and Software.

Orange do seem to release devices before they are ready- the P3600 Trinity had no GPS enabled on release, and the Touch Diamond was totally unusable (I had one of the 1st of those)- the GPS lost lock every 3 minutes, the frond end was slow and unresponsive and the whole device was prone to locking up. Thankfully XDA-Devs came to the rescue (or at least Olipro with HardSPL!) and we were able to load later more developed ROMs. Orange still haven't updated the Diamond to the V2 ROM.

I'm lucky in that I make minimal use of my TG as a phone. When I do, it is not a pleasant experience- low volume and crackling. Plus the lack of hardware phone buttons with the screen blanking 'feature'' means ending a call is more complex than it ought to be.  

Backups have to be copied to a PC or carry a spare SD card, as if the corruption occurs, there is a  strong likelihood that the backup folder will be fried as well!

I've settled on a somewhat odd 'front end' now- using Panoramic Launchpad, SpB PockdtPlus, Resco Contacts 2 and SBSH PhoneWeaver.  There is some duplication but each has its USP, and I still have nearly 70MB RAM after reset. This has been stable and reliable for 2 weeks now ( gosh- 2 whole weeks!)

Still sorely tempted by the Leo though
