Windows Mobile has been around for sometime now, and for me is starting to feel a bit outdated. However, I still use a Windows Mobile device almost daily. With Windows Mobile 7 round the corner...What features of Windows Mobile are essential for you?
Try to think of the top 3 features. These should be inbuilt features of Windows Mobile, not ones supplied by 3rd party apps.

For me it is:-
Exchange Mail, Calendar and Contact syncing.
Native Office file compatibility
and the fact it is flexible enough to allow me to change things myself, eg ROM's, apps etc.

You're not running Windows if there's no Solitaire. And Windows Mobile has it. One of the best features there is. :)

For me, there just aren't many other options. I want Exchange Push mail that really works (basically rules out all Nokia/Symbian devices). Nice customizable UI and applications that I can install without cluttering my PC with useless applications (rules out iPhone/iTunes).

Also, if I need to sync my phone at home with the data cable provided, Windows Mobile is yet again the only option. No need to install drivers/software since Windows Mobile Device Center comes bundled with Windows 7 and Vista (which are my current operating systems).

Since I use MS Office at work and home, I think I can expect that phones with Microsoft OS are compatible with them. You can't really be sure if you are using other operating systems on your phone. No need for compromises here.

It seems that Android is a good OS too. There just is no hardware matching my requirements yet. If they release a good Android phone, I might be interested and buy one later. Possibly.

For me its got to be native file compatibility (.doc and .wma) but coupled with the extras that it has like GPS and Wi-Fi (can't live without these two!) make it my best mobile OS.

How about the ability to do what I want to my device, when I want, and how I want to do it? I don't like being tethered to one source for all my software and accessories *cough*iGimmick*cough* like other companies *cough*CrApple*cough* want to make you do just so they can make things "easier" for the customer, while in reality all it does is makes it easier for the company to milk the developers for money.

I moved from Windows Mobile to android few weeks ago.

My only big disappointment is the Calendar !!!!!

I can not define Private Meeting, status (Busy, Free, Out of Office,...), attendees, and many other fine options that are really a basic when you want a device that can deal with your personnal and business requirement !!!

There is a place for an android application add-on to attract WindowsMobile users that are stuck with their company choice on Office Tools !

Hoping this will soon be available or I will have to move back to a WindowsMobile device and wait for android evolutions.

Hrm,

I just got an HD2 because I like to use CoPilot and CamerAware...

I love the HD2, but the OS is getting long in the tooth and the HTC customisations cannot hide all the legacy that resides in WinMo. I hate to say it but with serious alternatives (Android) I think it could be my last WinMo device as Android now has CoPilot and alternatives to CamerAware...

Unless of course WinMo 7 actually get's itself together in a decent form and timeframe...

I could not have said it better...the Android calender is a BIG disappointment....and somehow the contact feature is as well... these are the (my) two main features that I use the most...even the default WinMo calender is light-years ahead of both the Android and the Iphone (what I have seen so far on Ip)...and with for example Pocket Informant even more flexibility and choices are available....Perhaps when (if) Android is being updated calender wise and contact wise I will feel the same way for Android, but at this stage...no

Other than that I eWallet pretty much (both the WinMo and PC version).

Besides that I really like the amount of applications that are available and all the options/settings etc there are for the WinMo apps.

And even though the pen seems to be kind of outdated it is still one of the better "tools" and IMHO I still think it gives some more options and is "easy to use" rather than the finger touched devices....

1. Exchange Sync

2. Profiles and (by extension) the multitude of vibe/ring options (BROKEN IN 6.5 SP - thanks HTC!)

3. Flexible and changeable OS to suit the owner

Regarding number 2 above. The latest volume up/down on the HTC 6.5 Smartphone (Dash 3G etc) version BREAKS the profiles. Vibrate does not work for Notifications or Reminders, once the volume rocker is used. It overwrites the registry entries, so renders the profiles useless. I find it amazing that NOONE seems to be commenting on this huge flaw! Anyone else? Or am I the only one that wants vibe and sound for my reminders etc?

Well as an iPhone owner who used to love windows mobile these I what I would love to see in the new Windows Mobile 7

Being able to just use your phone with a standard usb cable (USB Drive, File Transfer - soooo easy on Winmo!)

Constant updates from one source (eg Microsoft providing a website with all the updates as and when they are released for the phones - or poss HTC taking this one over as the device manufacturer.) This would make things alot easier for new Windows Mobile users and would mean rather than Orange have updated their latest HTC device ROM but Vodafone and Tmobile are still waiting for the update. Would just make things easier.

Office Compatibility - Sooo easy to use! Documents on the go, priceless!

After now getting my replacement phone from my Windows Mobile 6.0 to iPhone 3GS 32GB I have to say..... WOW! BLOODY WOW !!!!

I used my Tytn for work - to try to replace my laptop - SatNav, Wi-Fi, BT and RDP, as well as Outlook sync, ect

iPhone does and exceeds all of this. I got a free RDP app, Syncs with Outlook via desktop, but now got it working with Exchange.

Word / Office docs MUCH MUCH better compared to WM!! Sorry, but I have to tell you, WM is naff !! Doc2Go is just flawless !

Wi-Fi so much better, no hassle with connectivity. Speed is just great. Using the phone and being able to DIAL a number that does NOT catch up with me is great!!! WM is a real let down in this area.

But, more amazingly is the fact I have been able to play games like Brothers in Arms, Dragons Lair, Space Ace, PaperBoy on a iPhone is just amazing. WM could not achieve this !

Maybe WM 7 can ?? But I will not be waiting to find out! I have so many more free stuff, but it is a real achievement that this iPhone can do SO much. Graphics, sound, gameplay is just unreal (if you really are into games, which I am not, but boy playing Dragons Lair on an iPhone is good!!)

Also, Jailbreaking (which you could compare to say a CUSTOM WM ROM) was a breeze. Opened up a whole new world.

Those that remember Microsoft selling iPaq's as Pocket PC's before being labelled "Smartphones" could really say that the iPhone IS INDEED a Pocket PC!!!

Roll on Monday for work ........ I think work is going to become easier !
