I did it like this. (Offcource if you have the AndroidSDK map in C: with all the necessary files in it like recovery-RA-Hero-v1.5.3.1.img,...)

(with the phone in normal mode)

1) Connect your Hero via usb to your pc/mac/...

2) Open Command Prompt ->

Put in the following text ->

C:\Users\Username> cd\

C:\>cd android\tools\

C:\>android\tools>adb push recovery-RA-Hero-v1.5.3.1.img /sdcard/recovery-RA-Hero-v1.5.3.1.img

C:\>android\tools>adb shell flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-Hero-v1.5.3.1.img

3) JOB DONE! ;)

I know there are other ways to do it, but this is how I did it.

Thanks a lot ZeppeMan. This method worked for me.

You can do this on the move too by using one of the many Terminal Emulator apps in the Market (or by SSH'ing in via PuTTY):

  • Download the image to the SD Card (/sdcard/recovery-RA-Hero-v1.5.3.1.img)
  • Fire up a shell window (or use PuTTY to connect to the phone)
  • Type 'SU' at the prompt
  • Type 'flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-Hero-v1.5.3.1.img' at the prompt
  • Wait about 30 seconds
  • Done! (reboot into bootloader mode to test)

Just for information, may sound stupid but is it possibile to update the recovery image trough flashrec like i did the first time i rooted the phone?
if your kernel is still that of 2.73.405.5, you can still use flashrec. if you are using MCR or any other later firmware, flashrec won't work for you anymore.

(snip)

Know I can't access to fastboot mode, how can I repair this?

I got this when I tried to flash the recovery image and I cancelled it and was able to get into the recovery.

Try these instructions from Amon_RA

adb shell reboot bootloader

fastboot boot recovery_RA_hero_v1.5.3.1.img

adb shell mount /sdcard

adb push recovery-RA-hero-v1.5.3.1.img /sdcard/recovery_RA_hero_v1.5.3.1.img

adb shell flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery_RA_hero_v1.5.3.1.img

adb shell reboot

Note that the instructions at the start of this thread are slightly wrong and the filename has _s and not -s in it. I think this might have caused the problems for me the first time. Check the filename of the file you downloaded.

Exactly what happened to me. Power on your hero while holding down the volume down button. then:
fastboot erase recovery

fastboot flash recovery *filename of recovery in the pc directory cmd is running in*

Hmmmm... I did a nand backup, played with a different rom for a bit, then did a wipe (data and dalvik) and restore. After my restore, all of the homescreen shortcuts for my installed apps did not work any more. The app would start, close and the icon would vanish. I had to redo all of the shortcuts and now I'm back in business. I also lost the settings for a couple of widgets I installed.

Only the downloaded apps/widgets were affected. I am not using apps2sd. Did I miss something?

I have a real problem, I was getting the error messages when I tried to used adb to flash the new recovery, and when I try the fastboot method to flash it (now my recovery is broken) I'm getting remote: not allow

Please help!

EDIT: phew, got it sorted, I downloaded the original files to my pc and went through the adb process again with this one: recovery-RA-hero-v1.5.3.1.img and it worked

I just wanna let you know my experience...fasten your seatbelt :D

I used better terminal to upgrade my recovery and read error happened...ok, so i went trough the adb procedure...same error.

So i was thinking, reading this thread, that i would was unable to reach my old recovery. I turned off the phone and the recovery was upgraded!

Fresh 1.5.3.1 is in there, all the functions are alive and kickin!

Don't know what happened...but i got it, if someone can explain to me what's going on i would really appreciate!
