It's a shame, but it's official.

Customer services in Sweden and the Netherlands have now confirmed that 2.1 for the Hero is delayed and will be released at the end of April.

As a bonus bit of news, it will be supplied over the air in the Netherlands. Though i wouldn't recommend hitting the download button, it will probably disable your root-access.

Really doubting wether i should try a legend or eris port. Cant stand to wait more than a month <_<

The Eris builds are probably better than the Legend ones. That being said, you can pretty well expect a stable 2.1 release soon as we get the Legend.

You can easily try an eris/legend port before the officiel release. With Titanium Backup it's really easy to go from a rom to another one. All the applications data and settings are kept, the only downside is that you have to press yes/yes/yes ... to install every app in the free version.

Edit : Eris built seem to be faster but the most complete roms are the ports from the latest legend leak (embedded webviewer working, mms working and everything else working apart from video, however, sense is significantly slower...)

please remember that the message you got it from is a forum post that quoted a vague 3 to 4 line HTC support mail. (at least that is the source for Tweakers.net and the other techsites that are reporting this). The source is actually quiet about 'over the air', and I simply don't see OTA working to be honest. It isn't really builtin into the Hero, and the hero is sold separately, so they have no idea if the person actually has a dataplan or not.

The fact that they said 'OTA' means I don't trust any of it

Dear HTC,

Go ahead and take more time.

Than force us to upgrade to HTC Legend or Desire for 2.1 right.

However, I want our HTC Hero Kernal for 2.1 ROMS first!

There's a lot of Eris ports out there, tried Raidroid and it works great. So, HTC can take how ever long they like... I won't be upgrading my hardware until the end of next year (for free!).

I just hope the mail is false as well, and the fact that they've blurred out the name of the recipient of the message raises some further doubt. But the site the original message comes from (androidworld.nl) states that they've checked it themselves at HTC benelux and that they've confirmed.

Edit: Thanks for the tips on which port to go for.

From a reliable source, 2.1 rolls out the end of April starting in Taiwan using OTA were available.

Or at least that is the current upgrade schedule...

Lets face it, they want us all to go out and buy shiny new Legend's and Desire's.

They can yank our chains as long as they feel like it, and probably will.

All they want is that, people should go and buy HTC Legend instead of buying a Hero and updating it to 2.1 update and they are delaying the update because they don't want that Hero should hamper the sales of Legend.

Agreed...Doesn't technology suck? The phone is less than one year old and it's already obsolete. I also think they want people to buy new hardware that won't get the 3.0 update and so on and so on. If everyone is happy with their updated Hero why would they buy something else? That would hurt the profits of HTC.

I'd hardly call the Hero "obsolete"! I really don't know what all the fuss is about... they aren't contractually obliged to release new software for the Hero, but they have said that an update to the latest version of Android is on the way. I'm looking forward to trying some of the apps that require 2.0+ (e.g. Google Goggles), but there's plenty to keep me amused that works on 1.5.

Why is this an "official" delay? When did they official announce a date in the first place?

Answer: they haven't

My concrete and official piece of info regrading this is that after HTC official announced it a MWC, T-Mobile UK said they hoped to get it out in April. SO I don't see any delay here at all.

1.5 and bluetooth don't work. That's a VERY good reason for HTC to get the 2.1 update to all HERO users IMO. I've paid a lot of money for something that isn't fully functional

It was like that when you bought it. If you had researched the phone, you would have knew it was like that when you handed over the cash, it's not like they said bluetooth file sharing was there and it didn't work.

I don't knowingly by a car without an airbag and complain it isn't there when I crash it

And how the f**k do you now when I bought it? As it happens I got the Hero the first week it was out in the UK. People were hardly shouting at the time about non functional bluetooth. So get off your high horse. I do hate a know-it-all smart arse

Doesn't matter when you bought it, the functionality wasn't there. It's down to the OS not the phone, and the same problem was in the G1. So liek I said, if you had done your research, you would have know that. There's a difference between being a smart-ass, and not committing to a several hundred pound piece of kit without knowing what it does and doesn't do.

I do hate people who get defensive and abusive when they are wrong

Errr what have I said that's wrong? I bought a phone that was/is sold as having bluetooth. I expect that little piece of hardware to work - how silly of me. I don't need stupid comments made about "well if you researched it". The point is, the phone is sold as having bluetooth... So why shouldn't I expect it to work? If it wasn't for the healthy "chef" scene out there I would still be very dissapointed, but due to there hard work I can have bluetooth. And this leads me to the initial topic and my response - HTC SHOULD be getting off there back sides and fixing their problems by issuing an official 2.1 release for the HERO.

Bluetooth works OK on my 1.5, I don't have the ability to share files over it but I knew that would be the case when I bought it and it wasn't all that important to me. I just use it for a bluetooth headset.

I'm losing a lot of love for the android movement, the software advances are too slow to roll out (in my experience with HTC and that has been my biggest disappointment). I've said it before though and it's been mentioned here that we have no god-given right for updates but when a phone (the "Magic") reaches the point where it will have no more software releases within a year of being released, it makes me feel that something somewhere just isn't working.

Chances are though that I just had the wrong expectations. I now have a clearer expectation of HTC and Android ... I liked being an early adopter and supporting the movement but I'll jump off the bandwagon now until Android's a bit more grown up.

All the same, roll on 2.1. I look forward to Paul's wizardry getting it right for HTC. <_<

Just to poke my 5eggs in, i'm with the 'Dont Sweat It' lot...

i bought the phone knowing exactly what it does and what it doesn't do and if i was after a particular function not in Cupcake AND i couldn't wait for the Nexus One or similar a cooked ROM was always an option..

BT file transfer?? yeah, i agree thats a potential PITA but then i think back to when i last NEEDED that function rather than just having a mate send, erm, 'interesting' movies ,cough cough, or some lame sound clip and i realised i am happy with the Hero as she stands!

All that said, i'll be putting 2.1 (or 2.2 or 3.9 or whatever actually get released) once HTC have officially released it just cos it will re-invigorate my toytime!!

if only 2.1 sorted out the poxy camera... cant see a software release coming with a xenon flash and decent lens tho. <_<
