It won't transfer the msgs from hero to desire but you can transfer all your Hero messages to you gmail account under a "SMS" Lable. I second the SMSBackup option - at least then if I break/lose my phone or have to wipe it, the messages are still in my gmail account. Also keeps my messages client nice and tidy! I know though that some people like to keep all their messages in one place.
