USB Port problem

I normally use an adapter to let me use a 3.5mm jack to listen to music on my Touch Dual. Yesterday this stopped working. Plugging the adapter in does not cut the sound any more (i.e. the music comes out of the phone speaker, not the headphones). I tried the headphones that came with the phone and the same problem.

From that I conclude that there is a problem with the port - for some reason it is not informing the phone that the headphones have been inserted.

The phone is recharging using the recharger so the port is not completely broken.

Any suggestions?
