I received my Desire on Wednesday, and being my first Android I've spent the time checking out various apps.  Not hundreds, by any means, and things that I didn't like I've uninstalled.  So I was amazed today to get the low storage warning.  I've got 22.74mb remaining on the phone!  Yet my 8gb sd card just sits there, lonely and unloved.

I know I could root and put on App2SD.  I know when we get our update to 2.2, I can install straight to SD.  In the meantime, is there anything I can do?  Using the 3rd part app Uninstaller, I can see a couple of HTC update items - com.htc 2.1-update 1, at 18774kb and Android System 2.1-update 1 at 5182Kb.  Are these installer files, and ok to delete, or will uninstalling them roll me back some updates within Android?

I'm really, really suprised, shocked and disappointed with how quickly this phone has "filled up", despite 7Gb sat begging on the SD!

I feel your pain. But unfortunately there's not much you can do. Lack of internal memory is probably the only complaint i've ever had about the Desire.

Try clearing some cache.. Otherwise root and use apps2sd.

I intended to root, just didn't expect to be forced into it within a week of owning it!  Until I get the chance to tackle rooting, how do I clear the cache?

You can't clear the cache easily without rooting (irony?), but to clear the cache of individual apps, go to settings -> applications -> manage applications, and you can do it from there. The internet browser and market use quite a lot of cache, and a lot of other apps use smaller amounts.

You can get an app to clear the caches. It basically does the same thing mentioned above but it shows you which apps are using the most cache first, so you don't have to navigate through all your apps to know which are using a lot of cache.

Its called Quick App Clean.

Don't be a tard.

Speaking of not being able to figure simple stuff out.. did you not notice that the guy in the thread you linked is called frogfire and the OP here is dirtyfrog? They don't even sound alike.

You know you can sort by size at the Manage Applications screen from the menu, right? :D

Does your mummy know that you're on the internet unsupervised?  Retard.

Thanks for the tips everyone else.  Yes, I'm a little nervous of rooting, I wanted to see if I can avoid doing it and just wait for the rumoured impending OTA update to 2.2.  I'll try the cache clearing and see where that gets me.

Just got that Quick App Clean, nothing seems to really have huge caches, but it did show me one thing - the internal storage on the Desire is 148mb!?!?! That is absolutely laughable....

Internal storage is around 512MB.. most of it is taken up by the Android and HTC software.

It's just an unsubstantiated rumour from one guy who claims to have contacted HTC support. Consider that the Hero 2.1 update was rumoured for last November and it only got released in Asia a couple of weeks ago and still hasn't reached Europe. In other words, don't hold your breath.

You're not forced to do it... That happened to me too, I just began deleting apps that were useful, but not important. I rooted it afterwards since I wanted a custom ROM

I had the same issues with the desire after moving from an iPhone 3G. I bought a class 6 SD card, rooted with an A2SD+ ROM and have never looked back. Now I have HEAPS of apps on my phone and storage mem never drops below 100mb.

Root that bad-boy! (Esp now it's risk free!)

I'm going to, but although I flashed my previous phone, HTC Touch HD, I'm a bit more nervous this time.  The "risk-free" method thread has over 117 pages, and looking though a few it seems there are a lot of problems that people are hitting!  If I attempt it and badword up, how easy is it to just wipe and restore back to stock?  I guess that depends how far into the rooting process I get?

I know most people reading this thread have managed to root their Desire, and I know I'll be able to do it, I just want to know that I have a "get-out" clause if I badword up!

*edit* ooopth I said a bad word

The first 100 pages are from the non-riskfree root method(s).
Go for it.

Woo and yay!  Goldcard created, phone rooted, rom flashed - now running on r19-update-bravo-modacocustomcustomrom-withadditions-a2sd-signed

Through My Backup I seem to be up and running again.  Couple of very minor issues though.

I've added my Facebook account through Settings, Accounts.  Logged in fine, the app and the widget work correctly.  But when I go into contacts, no-one is linked with their Facebook profile.  If I go settings, display options, I don't have FB available.  If I do Accounts, add account, when I select FB it just returns to the settings screen without adding.  I just tried logging out from the app, then logging into FB via contacts, and it just logged me back into the app, still no linking in contacts.  However in the relevant contacts, I do still have the HTC FB profile id... help!!

Also, it looks like by restoring all my apps, they've gone and installed to internal storage again!  As I'm on Froyo, I understand they should install to the sd - can I move my installed apps, or should I go through uninstalling and reinstalling them all?

Rooting and upgrading was all to free up internal space, after all!!

OK, can now see by searching the ROM thread that the Facebook issue is a known one.  Grrr!

Ignore the rest of this post, I was being stupid...
