Just arrived here after loosing my Hero and getting an upgrade.

Bit disheartened to realise how just how hard it seems to root the Desire in comparison to the Hero.

I was wondering, do I try it now, or is it going to get amon-ra type stuff further down the line that'll make everything that much easier?

It doesn't get any easier than this!

Whilst it's not as easy as the Hero, I found rooting my Desire pretty painless - everything is even more painless now I have the fake-flash solution.

I never had a Hero so I can't really comment on how more difficult it is, but it was easier than I thought it would be. Once you root I image the functionality to be the same as with your Hero, so if it is hard it'll only be once.

My biggest issue was assessing how to retain my settings etc, so if you have a fresh Desire then I'd root away.

Give it a shot, Making a goldencard + the routing process took me less than an hour. That was REALLY taking my time and re-reading each instruction line an obsessive compulsive amount of times.

It was actually fun. The May27th mod is great if you like the stock HTC rom. I couldn't be happier with it. Well worth the little risk it takes.

Roots are painless as long as you just follow the guide word for word.
There was a few seconds where I thought **** **** ******** piece of **** and then it began booting, guess it was just slow, but it brought my nerves on :-/
