if for backing up contacts, you can simply sync your phone with Outlook by using Activesync.

If you use other phones in future, they all have programs that can sync with Outllook, your contacts.

(Another simple way is just to copy the PIM.vol file, which is where WM phone stores all your contacts. You can transfer it any other WM phone and your contacts will be restored.

If just for backing up SMS, you can use a program called PowerSMS, it saves your SMS messages in CSV (comma separated value), and can be simply opened using Microsoft Excel.
