Major problem in 2.2 upgrade - Data not on phone

There appears to be a major problem with the 2.2 upgrade.

With 2.1 emails and calendar data were on phone.

Now they must be synced with server/cloud to appear on phone.

If you delete you mail from your primary computer, it will be gone from the Desire. No way to get it back.

Same for Gmail.

Calendar also needs a fresh sync to update calendar.

This is a major problem if you are out and about or roaming without a connection - no email (even what you previously downloaded), no gmail and no calendar.

HTC's solution is to reinstall 2.2 but with all the other problems I am very reluctant to do this.

Does anyone know what to do?
