I'm sure you've tried this already, but make sure you have connected the 3.5mm plug all the way in. I has this very problem on an old mp3 player, where the volume would be very low unless I made sure to really jam the plug all the way in.

1. Start an MP3 playing
2. Turn on the FM radio (set it to an untuned station)
Voila - loud.

Makes no difference on mine, radio or not.
It is pretty quiet although I have some shure in ears that compensate a little.
Be nice if we could increase it a little

try Lithium Music Player from the market. reviewers have said that it is a lot louder than the standard player. i don't have an android phone at the moment to check though.
just remember to uninstall it if it's not louder as you'll be charged €2 otherwise.

I am having problems hearing music with the supplied earphones even though the media player volume is turned up full. Ditto for the FM radio. Traffic noise outdoors completely drowns out what I'm listening to. I've flashed the phone with the custom ROM but doubt that has caused the problem. There is no volume control on the earphones and my hearing is fine! Does anyone have any ideas?

Hmmm, even using my ultimate ears (which are famously loud) it doesn't sound that loud...
I wonder if it's better over A2DP?

The XDA-dev link says:
- V2 revision 2
Completely distortion-less! The most popular version due to it's loud volume and good sound quality. Now being used pre-built into many custom ROMs.
Paul - what are the chances of this being included in the r3 ROM for the SF?

I think I might have a go with the instructions on the XDA site. Can anyone help with telling me how I can telnet or ssh into the phone? I have the r2 ROM which I believe includes busybox. I also have android terminal emulator.
EDIT - I navigated to the /system/etc/ folder & there was no sign of most of the files that the XDA-site modifies. Bummer.

Decent set of headphones and it's not too bad.

Did anyone get a solution to this? Its ok if your in a quiet environment, but any backround noise at all and you can hardly hear music, speech is even worse.

Mixzing music player has an eq with gain that pushes the volume up dramatically! It also however drains the battery quicker too.

Tried that, and it seemed to distort it a lot also. I might have a look at A2DP soon.
