I keep getting Syntax error: newline unexpected. I'm up to number 7. Please could you be more specific.
I've tweaked rjm2k's method a bit ...
Note that, if you have an old PPC (G4 or G5, not an Intel) Mac, then you can't run adb and/or fastboot-mac, so you have to go this sort of a way ...
Assumes a working unmodded phone
1. Using the web browser on the phone, Download and install Universal Root
http://forum.xda-dev...ad.php?t=747598
2a Download Terminal Emulator from the Market, we'll use it later.
2b Download Astro File Manager from Market -- its a handy tool. Install it and perhaps take a look at its help file.
Use it to back up any apps that you have installed. (Sync with Google to back up your contacts and calenders.)
If you want to back up other personal stuff on the phone (SMS texts, etc) check out other backup options. probably Titanium. We are going to wipe everything off the phone -- but not the sdcard.
3. Using the web browser on the phone, Download Paul's
CLOCKWORK Recovery 2.5.0.9 http://loadbalancing...co-r2-blade.img
{KISS, just loose in the sdcard, the top directory, not in a folder}
4 To make it easy, rename your downloaded ClockworkMod Recovery image with Astro (menu key, help if you need it)
Give it a short, easily typed name (ending .img) I am going to use recovery.img
If it downloaded into a folder, use Astro to move it to the top level of the sdcard.
And you can use Astro to check the MD5 Checksum, to make certain that there was no corruption during download.
5. Run the Universal Root program (to get "SuperUser" access, permitting you to twiddle with the protected parts of the phone's software)
6. On the phone, Run the terminal application and type su and a carriage return
Note that the terminal's text prompt will change from # to $
If it doesn't, then you haven't "rooted" the phone. Go back and try again!
7 In the Terminal, type
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
and once you have it
exactly correct, type a carriage return (and congratulate yourself on renaming it to something easy to type correctly, while you wait a moment for it to install.)
8 When it finishes and comes back with another $ prompt, type reboot and a carriage return
9 Watch as your computer reboots in an utterly normal fashion. We've installed a fabulous tool, (ClockworkMod Recovery), so that we can change everything easily from now on.
But we haven't altered what a normal user might normally see. Yet!
10 Power the computer off.
11 Power it on, while holding the "Volume -" button pressed. You can let go once after the Android appears.
And you are into Clockwork (yes, its upside down - isn't that great!) ... and can follow other guides for the full details.
For now press the Volume- key to go down the list to "backup and restore", then press the Home button (now at top right!) once to select that option. On the new "Nandroid" menu, "backup" is already selected, so just press Home again to start your backup of the phones complete current state.
It takes a couple of minutes...
Plenty time for me to say that now, whenever you screw up in future, you can switch on with Volume - held and you have a way out of your screwup. Just come in the same way, but select "restore", select which backup, labelled by date and time, you want to go back to. You should take a Nandroid backup like this before going testing anything!
When it finishes, just press the Home button once more to reboot.
12 And NOW you are ready to choose your rom,
As sensible starter roms for a UK-spec San Francisco, I'd suggest either Deorageatedv6 or Hungarian Hedgehogv2 - they both work very sweetly and seem to be 'of production quality' -- there's nothing unusual, broken or "optimised" to weird personal preferences.
On the phone, using the Web Browser, download the Rom of your choice to the sdcard.
You should use Astro to check its MD5, but there is no need to rename it! (You select it from a list in Clockwork.)
Then you only need to boot into ClockworkMod, erase Data and Caches, and (woohoo, at last!) ask Clockwork to install your new rom "from sdcard"...
After that, you might want to get another copy of Astro from the market and use it to restore your other apps from the Astro backups you took earlier ...
But you won't need me to tell you how to do that stuff. (If you want instructions for this stage, see the relevant sections of StevenHarperUK's guide here -
http://android.modac...and-other-roms/ )
So enjoy it!
