"adb: error" When doing anything but "adb devices"

I've been getting this error for a while now, I figured I hadn't set up drivers properly for Linux or the fact that I've been flashing different ROM's into it since I got it out of the box /shrug

I've got it running 4399 now with the 4399 recovery and superboot to kill the flashing lights and I still can't adb. My suspicions were confirmed when I logged into Windows 7 and installed the sdk there and got the exact same error message.

This seems to be a pretty common problem with Streak modders, I've been seeing people complain of it in a lot of different threads and forums, usually while using Ubuntu but now I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with Linux. I'm gonna be looking more into this and will post back here, just wanted to get all we know about this error in one place. It's a pain to develop apps having to ssh my apk over to my phone and reinstall every time I want to test drive >.<
