I've updated to 2.2 Official using Kies (no reg hacks)

Now sometimes my phone vibrates and then either pops up the dialog box with "Force close" button on it, or simply freezes, requiring me to remove the battery.

Dodgy phone, dodgy flash or dodgy firmware?

FW is JPO/JPP.

After you did the update did you do a data wipe/factory reset, this is needed to remove any traces of the previous version of the OS. Don't do a factory reset through setting>Privacy>factory reset because it doesn't seem to clear out the old data properly.
You will need to go into recovery mode using Volume up, Home key and the power button, keep them all pressed until you see the boot screen then release just the power button, keep the volume up and home key pressed until you see a lot of coloured text on the screen and then you can release the other two keys.
There should be blue text at the top, using the volume up and volume down buttons select data wipe/factory reset (or similar) and then us the home key to ok it. Doing this will erase all you contacts,music, photos memos, so back up all your important data ect.
