Ipad/Vega Owners - real world difference

Anyone with a vega and a ipad got a view to the real world difference?

I grudgingly initially got an Ipad after a few failed attempts of table/umpc/small andriod devices just not doing what I wanted and now I eqaually grudgingly love it.

But if something came out that meant I didnt have to admit in public to owning one Id buy it.. so no pressure :P

It's a mobile os shoehorned onto a tablet, with a slightly dodgy screen - in it's present state is it an iPad killer? No.

Is it £200 cheaper, with a better spec and begging to be hacked around with - yes!

You want pick up, play and perfect, stick with your iPad.

If you don't mind playing with stuff to get it to how you want it, grab a vega - it's a fun piece of kit, that's for sure!

:P

I returned my Vega due to poor screen quality and I've since paid the extra and bought an iPad (thanks to HUKD managed to get one for £140 less than RRP!).

Having used both I can say that the the Vega is much more customisable than the iPad, homescreen widgets are something iOS is lacking when compared to Android. I also found that Android phone apps scale up better than their iPhone counterparts.

The iPad however has better tablet orientated apps available and blows the Vega into the weeds for eBook reading. The screen is far superior, making PDF reading a joy (originally this is what I wanted the Vega to do).

This old chestnut again...

There is no such thing as an iPad killer... Tablet PCs like any other device are only as good as what you need them for...

Taking previous comments on this topic...

1) iPad is a Vega killer when it comes to reading PDFs ... No argument!

2) Vega is an iPad killer when it comes to swapping 32GB SD cards (and possibly USB sticks soon) containing your media and playing it directly, without having to use iTunes!

I'd hate an iPad as it is a "walled garden". You cannot even download standard file formats from the internet and play them without having your MacBook or Laptop near by to "sync with iTunes". Now, that is LAME to me and a DEAL BREAKER, hence I will NEVER EVER buy an Apple device.

Your requirements may differ... Make your own informed decision!

EDIT: This is quite funny... On the train on my way home from work in Cambridge, a fellow passenger was using his iPad sitting on the table opposite me and I think he was quite jealous that I could just swap out my MicroSD cards with other ones to play music and video. I met a fellow Android user on the same journey and showed him my Vega, and I just plugged it into his netbook and we shared some music and emulator ROMS. No iTunes, just drag and drop! Hehe! I hasten to add, he put his iPad away after we got discussing the pros (and cons) of Android when compared to iOS.

The iPad killer will likely be the 10.1" dual core Android device with a great quality, all round viewing angle display with Honeycomb installed. It's a shame that these devices have skimped on the display quality because I'd easily pay another £50-100 for a Vega with a display as good as an iPad or Galaxy Tab. No question.

I would never buy an Apple mobile product because of their closed practices and their "We know what's best for you" attitude. I'd rather have a slightly inferior open product than submit to that. So in that regard this is already my personal iPad killer although it was already dead to me anyway :P

I have a joggler/desire/and the reason Im nervous to try again a bookstand called SPAM v5 running or not as the case may be andriod 2.2/2.2/2.1.

Ill wait to see one in PCWorld first I suppose I wasnt impressed with the folio.

I love the Desire, especially since 2.2 and the hotspot

I think whats bugging me is this old 2.2 not for tablets thing - and as its not known what 2.3 or indeed 3 will need hw wise.

Didnt want to start a debate as such just a view from holders of both machines

Vs the ipad.

The vega has a better web browser due to having flash.

Now i know the apple crowd hate flash because steve jobs tells them to, but the fact remains that an awful lot of websites use it.

I think like some of the other comments there won't be such a thing as an IPad Killer. For those die hard apple geeks there can be no such things, but for those of us who actually have a brain and use it to decide what's best for ourselves I think the Vega is a good start.

I want a Vega mainly because it does almost everything I want it to do, which the Ipad cannot/won't, but also because I think apple products are over priced for what you get.

My other half loves her iphone, and would argue that it is better than my Desire, but half of her reasoning is the style. When you actually look at the available functionality of the Ipad/phone apple products (possibly my touch excluded as it does everything I needed it to, and my last company paid for it!) I think they are too limited (at least for me). If I decide one day that I want to try doing something I at least know that there is half a chance I'll be able to do it on Andoid/Vega/Desire.

For me the iPad is a restricted environment and I like to have more freedom. The Vega is less of a finished item, but at a price point I believe is about right and with storage and expansion I want from such a device. This is a very good first effort platform for the money, and if the Notion Ink Adam lives up to its promise at a good price point that will provide the benchmark going forward. Competition and quality should go onwards and upwards as the market matures.

For now - happy with the Vega.

My opinion, after having the iPad for a while, is...you can't kill a product, which is already dead ;) Seriously, holding this heavy metal plate, which is incapable of any normal daily task...feels like having a mirror (or yellow pages book to be more precise) and staring into it all the time. That's the possible usage of that "pad", or at least that's how Apple understands it. Unluckily the magical functionality is still not available in the iOS by now :P I understand that tablets != PCs and that a regular PC OS wouldn't fit easily on them. However, pretending that tablets should have an OS of a mp3 player is not the way forward.

So no, currently we don't have iPad killer as all the other companies are producing tablets. iPad isn't. My 2c.

Changed the topic - not after a fan boy fight - I know the differences, and realise one can do things better than the other etc etc

I own a real tablet had a M500 now down to just a M200 - but neither's an Ipad or Andriod devices are these so not sure why you commented on it?

Just want to know real dual machine owners view!

I suppose if someone was really determined it should be easy enough to replace the screen on the vega with a better one. Its a fairly standard size from what Ive seen and you get LCD and AMOLED units sold separately for the hardware hacking crowd. If you did that the vega could have an even better screen than the ipad.

Honestly though its really an apples and oranges debate. Not really easy to compare especially since one is the epitome of closed source and the other open.
