Vega Touch Screen Issue - Cause of multiple keypress etc. (video included)

Hi,

Had my Vega for 3 days now and in most ways I am really happy with it. For the price I don't have a problem with the viewing angles, and its very snappy. The software still needs some work (the Modaco rom is the main reason I took the plunge and bought one), but Android is definitely a more than capable tablet OS based on my experiences so far.

My biggest issue is hardware related. Lots of people have mentioned the dreaded multiple keypress issue and I think this relates to the quality of the capacitive touch screen. On my unit the touch sensor seems to have problems detecting a finger tip touch in certain areas of the screen, if you place more of your finger on the screen or use a thumb then it seem to work better.

My Vega seems to exhibit the issue the most towards the bottom of the screen (landscape with camera at the top). The effect of this is most pronounced on the keyboard, for example when I press delete near the top of the key it will often register that I pressed the L key, however if I turn the screen round 180 the keyboard works as expected.

This also seems to manifest itself as random link presses when slowly swipe scrolling down a webpage.

I have made a quick video to demonstrate this issue http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ViJ_8d3TlUs , and wondered if other people could download the Multi touch visualiser and see if your Vega has similar problems.

If everyone is having the same issue I might as well get a refund rather than a replacement, but I'm hoping I don't have to as apart from this touch screen issue I can't really fault it.

Very interesting, thanks for pointing to this app. I only seem to have multitouch issues when the tablet is plugged in. On battery everything is fine. I just ran Multitouch Visualizer which shows a very jittery cursor when plugged in, but a very steady one when unplugged. My screen seems oKay everywhere though. I don't have a dead zone near the bottom like you do.

I've had the same issue, I thought it was just me. I am interested to see if many others experience the same.

EDIT: I've just checked with multitouch Visualizer, got no dead zone but do see accidental random link presses. Probably just me... ;) :P

I noticed the same problem when plugged in. Some interference causing weird touch input.

Re Multi-touch issue whilst plugged in - I've just had my first experience of this, I've never used my vega whilst its been on charge b4 until now and I get the same issue. I'll test with the Multi-touch Visualizer and report back

Advent Vega need to be made aware of this

Ran the test and all seems fine until I plugged the charger back in and it was a little jittery, no dead zones near the bottom tho

No dead zones here. But I believe the cause of the multi-press on the keyboard if the failure to register a touch-off event, and I've been able to replicate this in multi-touch visualizer where I take my finger away and the touch point remains until I touch the screen again.

If I remember correctly we had similar issues with the Acer Liquid when it was first released, including weird anomalies when on charge and dead zones around the screen edges, it was fixed within a few firmware upgrades. Probably worth holding on and making @AdventVega aware of it to see what they can make of it. I've no idea if it was a kernel or radio/firmware issue though...

Wow, i never noticed this before until now. This is what i observed whilst using the app "multi touch visualiser 2":

Without mains cable plugged in, running my finger around the border of the screen, no dead-zones detected. Slow movement with finger provides a smooth tracking experience. Holding my finger on screen provides a steady (no jitter) tracking cursor. Multi-touch with 2 fingers, behaves in similar fashion, smooth and no false readings.

With mains cable plugged in, it's a different story. Tracking is still responsive, but get occasional deadzones, but is totally random. Holding my finger still in a single space, gives some weird feedback with the cursor, the only way to describe it, is like the cursor is "vibrating".

If i hold my finger on the screen and repeatedly unplug and plug the mains in/out i can see the "vibrating" effect only occur with the mains plugged in. The cursor is stable (no vibrating effect) when the device is running on battery alone.

Conclusion:

For a smoother and more responsive experience, don't use the vega when it's charging. It seems there is some interference when on mains that affects the capacitive screen performance.

So this is 100% a hardware issue then?

Might be a longshot but do the random touch events happen where that vega application launcher is at the bottom of the screen? Can you disable/remove this and try the test again? (Just thinking it might be grabbing focus and killing the touch events).

I have the problem of random added characters too whether plugged in or not. No probs with multi touch Visualizer.

I think my Vega has to Go back. Really annoying.

I have just recieved unit from batch 5

Typing is near impossible. Delete key in particular. Always registers L and rather strangely H hey.

I have installed Smartkeybaord Pro and run calibrate with no sucess.

Is anyone else struggling with this or returned on this basis?

Is this with the unit plugged into the mains?

Thank you for suggestions.

I have added r4 and performance pack and tried with unit unpluged and have not seen any change. I will keep practising / perservering for a day or so and see if any improvement or bedding in? The strange thing is when i get random letter not adjacent to keys pressed so not a sensitivity thing.

That is odd. There is an app called something like Multitouch Analyzer 2 which maps you touch screen as you use it. See how you go.

Are you on the latest ROM (1.06.5)?
