Hi

I have had my Orange San Francisco phone for a month now (purchased from Orange shop) but my knowledge of smart phones (android) is VERY limited. Something I have noticed (and worries me) is that when I've used the AVG antivirus scanner, it has reported my phone as being "rooted". Does this mean that it has already been tampered with?

Anyway, what's the point of getting rid of the Orange Apps, if you install bloatware like AVG Antivirus on the phone yourself ?
AVG is imo a very bad AV program, known for getting false positives even on PC, so it does not mean your phone is rooted.

No its not actually rooted. I have it as well but when you try to use an app like titanium backup which requires the phone to be rooted it will state the phone isn't rooted. So AVG is giving a false positive

Thanks for the replies guys . I run Linux on my PC's but I'm completely new to smart phones I'm afraid . Being that I don't understand smart phones yet, I thought it a good idea (just in case) to install an antivirus package.

Something else I noticed (having read from another post) was that when I switched my phone off and started with the volumn down button, it displayed a white box with "FTM" or something similar (can't remember now). Is this normal? I had to take the battery out to restart.

That's perfectly normal. There are special boot modes used for debugging and flashing your phone. But you should read the stickies and you will understand what each does.

yes field test mode it's normal
will disappear after install  clockworkmod (take a look at pinned topics for moding your phone)

Thanks for confirming. I have been reading bits here and there and assumed that some kind of recovery software had been installed (prior to my purchase). So the rom flashing is part of the Android OS?

This only appeared under "Settings" and appeared when scanning with an active wireless connection. When not connected, everything was fine. Anyhow, I have uninstalled AVG now. Thanks.

The flashing functions are mostly part of the phone's low level functions and not directly in connection with the Android OS itself.
