[POLL] Advent Vega Charging and USB Dock

£30 for a 3 port hub and charger sounds about right. £70 for a stand (i.e. 30% of the price) when the whole unit cost £250 would be, to put it mildly, a ripoff... :D I haven't bought an iPad you know :P

£30 sounds about right for me as well, but I'm also wondering if there will be an update for the vega to support the dock's usb ports.

I would buy it up to £30, but would only really use it as either a desktop email replacement, if I could plug a keyboard in, or alternatively as a quick/convenient way to charge and play media on TV via HDMI.

Hmmm ... okay so I thought I'd comment -

Price-wise I'd be happy with £30 - £40 BUT I really hope that that blue light does not stay on all the time as its both irritating and tacky.

I would be more than a little concerned about build quality - I currently own a screen protector which cost 10 times what it should have done and didn't come with a hole for the camera ... I don't know how that will ever get sorted as I assume that DSG will not be replacing these "faulty" goods ? (A question that I'd like answered please).

Personally, I will only invest in the dock if I know the device has a future - there's a lot of talk on Honeycomb (Android 3.0) at the moment and the required specs - seems to me that the Vega may get traded in by a lot of people once we know for definite on the its compatibility ... early days I guess but heck we don't know what the score is with 2.3 or with getting Flash Player back officially on the device (and without sync issues).

I think DSG need to give us some insight into their committment to the product, how many there are in the wild, whats in the pipeline for improvements etc etc - I don't want to be nasty but, I'll be no-ones quick buck ... bang out some units, sell some overpriced accessories and then run for the hills and move onto the next product. Christ - just look at the support the Amico guys have received ... zip. We've spent a little more so perhaps we've a little more to spend ...

Apologies for my terminology but, those who know me understand my demeanour - straight down the line.

DSG have made a decision to use social media to communicate with us / market to us ... let's socialise on equal terms ...

£29.99 would make me purchase. Would the tablet switch from Host/Slave as the tablet was connected/disconnected or would the usb port on the tablet stay in slave mode (as I assume)? also would the bottom of the dock be rubberised?

+1 especially the comment re switching from slave to host.

Also would this have another psu included or is this using the one that already comes with the Vega.

If its not going to have a new PSU then I would want to knock at least a tenner off the price.

( BTW I already have a pair of ebay plate stands that do a pretty good job for less than 2 quid as recommended above )

My take on this is a little different.

We all bought Vegas because we thought it offered remarkable value for money. DSGi have brought it to us at a very competitive price point and have struggled to meet demand. However, the product is not retail-ready. If they were to introduce them to their stores they would be returned as 'unfit for purpose' in huge amounts, as was the Toshiba. Presumably that is why they are talking to Paul, seeking his help to make it a finished product.

In the electronics industry, and many others, it is standard practice to sell an item at a competitive price-point and then, instead of making a big profit on the item itself, to load that profit into accessories.

I'm not surprised the screen-protector is so expensive (though I am surprised it isn't a specific one, with camera-hole etc).

I'm not surprised the case is so expensive.

That's just the way it always is with official gear, if demand is great enough, third-partys will step in and offer lower prices.

I would be surprised if DSGi have made any profit so far from the Vega after you factor in the cost of supporting it.

I would expect the purpose of this vote/thread was to test the water. DSGi are trying to accertain is there is sufficant demand for the docking station at a price that will allow them to make a decent profit.

If (as seems to be the case) the response is that people say they are only willing to pay £30 for one, my guess is, they'll never have the opportunity to buy one.

DSGi will conclude that there it is not a viable product.

There you go. That's my tuppence worth. And yes, I was a DSGi employee, but that was back in the ninetys, I'm better now...

This was testing the water really for how interested the community was. Our concern in the accessory team was that there was not the demand for this product and we would be left with expensive, product specific docks that would make us little or no money. Having looked at the comments and poll results, we're going to move forward and get this into the market. We will try to get the price as low as possible and hope it will prove a useful accessory. Thanks for all the feedback.

Thanks for the added info!

Hope this will be available here (The Netherlands) soon too!

(I know that's not up to you.)

Can you hint us on the expected price range?

(Couldn't resist asking :D)

I think the poll results speak for themselves. There is a cheaper stand case coming also.

Great news - Thanks :D

Any word on an eta for these? I'm very interested in both, especially if they come in at a good price as the poll results seem to suggest :P

I would very much be interested in some kind of dock. the main point for me would be if it has its own charger or not. Currently I move between a few different places daily and have to take my charger with me just in case. Id like to have charing capability at both ends leaving me with enough power for the trips through the middle.

Also if the hdmi port works well I can see myself leaving it near my TV for watching films. Currently I have my old pc plugged in for this.

Very interested in the case stand as well! Anythihg like the iPad folio one mentioned below?

If any of you have used the case on the iPad that folds back and makes the device sit up at about 30'. You'll know that this is ideal if you are typing with it on a desk or on your knee.

Thanks.

I voted £20 max.

It is after all not much more than a USB hub and a handy place to drop your Vega.

With reference to the comment by Justabloke earlier, I like your thought process, as a consumer I find myself buying some of these products and then not buying the accessories. I can get by without a screen protector (its not like its in my pocket with my keys), I can get by without a dock (works just as well without it now), I bought a 3rd party slip case that does what I want it to do and it cost a 3rd of the official one.

Im also a tightwad :D

@vegaaccs And a screen protector for me with a hole for the camera ?

The latest one's already have a hole cut. It seems to have been the 1st batch that didn't...

Will the cheaper stand case be released at the same time?

Does it come with a PSU or do we use the original one that came with the tablet?
