Phone Upgrade Time

So, in one month I am due for my phone upgrade from T-Mobile UK, I will be upgrading from my HTC Desire which I have had no issues with since putting MCR on it.

The question is...

What should I "upgrade" to?

  • DesireHD?
Should I wait for the next big thing (If so, what is it)?
Should I just pick-up a phone and sell it on (So keep my Desire)?

Cheers for the advice/help guys.

I got mine an unbranded model on a £40 a month 12 month deal with Vodafone. My contract is now due, and originality I was going to sell my desire (but definitely not on ebay because they rip you off big time when you sell a mobile phone) and then get a Nexus S, but first thing is I like sense so it ticked the wrong box, secondly its specification doesn't really stand out nothing revolutionary like say a dual core processor for example which 2011 is going to be flooded by these phones.

So I have now decided when my contract is up since my Desire is rooted, and supported by most ROM developers some even doing Desire HD ports for I'd say at least another year even after at present HTC have probably decided by now that HTC Desire HD is more important then its predecessor and since some developers may be tied into 24 month contracts they keep supporting the Desire long after.

So to cut a long story short I have decided to get a SIM deal for £10.50 on 3 Three on a rolling 12 month contract the other £30 i will be saving up, ready to put it towards a new phone added to the sale of my Desire, when one that stands out from the crowed becomes available.

Yes, wait. Wait for Mobile World Congress next month.

HTC announces a new flagship model basically every half a year. They announced the Desire at the mobile world congress last year, and then the Desire HD half a year later. They won't announce nothing at the mobile world congress this year, and it's about time for a new flagship model.

Hopefully the new big thing from HTC will be a dual-core CPU equipped phone, given that both LG and Motorola have already announced their dual-core phone. (and maybe also tablet!) I also hope that they can come up with some new industrial design for their phone. I was really exciting seeing the designs of the Desire, Legend, and Mini HD this time last year (and of course the Hero even earlier), and I thought HTC was the only manufacturer in the industry other than Apple that can come up with interesting design. But since then, every one of their phones looked just like a modified Nexus One/Desire, and that's very boring.

Wait for an Android device with a dual-core processor.

Once you see something you like, get it. Keep waiting and you'll wait forever. Likewise, the sooner you upgrade, the sooner the countdown to your next device starts!

I would wait for this one, I guess.

I'm currently on the same 40/m 12 month Vodafone deal ending in May and, probably an European version of the Infuse is going to be released by then. I don't think I'd be able to apreciate an LCD based phone any more as I've had an AMOLED Desire for some time now.

An HDMI out would have been nice, of course - didn't see that mentioned in any spec sheet, so I assume making a device 9 mm thick was more important to Samsung .

I also do hope they would be using a different GPS chip in their '11 models, as the one found in the Galaxy S series is reportedly a disaster.

I am not aware of any features in Gingerbread that would take advantage of a dual core CPU. Honeycomb does that from what one can infer from the demos, but it remains to be seen if it will make a good smart phone platform. So in all likelihood Tegra 2 chips found in phones will not live up to their full potential untill maybe the end of 2011.

Personally, I'm waiting for the Motorola Atrix, which Orange has announced they will be carrying.

Here is a run-down of the best upcoming phones, courtesy of Gizmodo.

They have the Atrix leading the pack.

When I upgrade from my beloved Desire, it'll be to that, unless HTC manage to announce something very impressive indeed in Barcelona next month.

All about dual processor and s/w taking advantage of it. Until then, 1GHZ Snapdragon plus root + custom ROMS, what else do you need? Go SIM only, save a bunch of money. Then again, I say that but if it was me and I walked into a shop and saw a shiny new phone, I'd probably get sucked in :-p

Sell your existing phone on eBay and buy a second hand 'newer' model again on eBay.

Did this with my 12-month old Hero and had a 1-month old Desire for £100 ;)

The beauty of not upgrading your phone is that you will be placed on a month by month contract so your not tied in until you find the phone you want.

There is no real 'groundbreaking' upgrade from the Desire; the Desire HD has a bigger screen at the expense of battery life, the Desire Z is thicker and not everyone wants a keyboard, the Nexus S doesnt some with HTC Sense ;)

I'm too looking at the Motorola Attrix but I would certainly suggest you hang fire for MWC next month.

Thanks

See how Tegra 2 performs on current version of Android:

If you are not going to change your phone every few months. At least wait until Mobile World Congress in February to see what your options are.

The Motorola Atrix is at the top of my list at the moment too ;)

Unless HTC somehow trump everything about the Atrix with their own dual-core monster.

at least that new Samsung looks nice - even if it is HUGE!!

Yes but their UI is even uglier than the stock android UI. And that's hard to manage.

My assumption is based on my experiences with i900, i9000 and Galaxy S. They all have that ugly UI.

And I agree. That thing is almost as big as my laptop. ;)

I'm just not accustomed to that odd widget bar they use and it takes too much real estate on the screen.. And their Slovenian translation is awful so I couldn't even use the phone until I've set it to English.

I would get an DesireHD and sell the Desire ;) Sense HD is Godlike and the DesireHD has a good CPU much RAM and much NAND Space a bigger Screen it looks great and i think its the next Phone of the Year ;-)

I think that Desire HD is OK but the biggest screen I can tolerate is the size of the one Desire is using.

I don't mind a bigger resolution but I want a phone not a tablet computer in my pocket.

Besides I would probably need a gun permit for such a big phone. ;)

No, that's called HTC JackBauer 5G.

I'm almost sure that you're wrong. That's HTC Chuck Norris 4G. It's similar to HTC JackBauer 5G but it has a white casing and this one is black.

But I could be wrong. ;)

The only problem with the HTC JackBauer is that the battery only lasts 24 hours!

You mean minutes right?... And after that it'll self distruct in 5 4 3 .... oh wait.. that's another movie :)
