A quick look at the extracted system.img reveals that two apks have been added...

TaskManager.apk

UpdateService.apk

Also, 'abtflit' has been removed from /bin

There's stuff in there for GPS as well... If you look at the build.prop, it has stuff in it about the 3G module and the GPS, and there is also a 'gps.conf' in /etc

There's also a few libraries appeared in /lib... 'libhw_gps.so' and a few more...

There's also a 'libsupl.so'... anyone know what it's used for?

Is there a change log?

As far as I know only a vague change log was tweeted by @adventvega...

You can find it in the first post...

When Paul finishes his file comparison, maybe he can tell us more about the changes and the consequences...

In that case, they're either preparing for 3G or have already added it to the kernel, is the boot.img the same as the one from 1.06.5? If it isn't, hopefully a 3G USB dongle will now connect.

Anyone flashed this yet and able to confirm if the GPS options are added back into location settings yet? This (hopefully) would fix the Navigation problems i'm facing......

No, it's slightly bigger... the boot.img from 1.06.5 is 4.05MB (4,253,696 bytes) and the boot.img from 1.08 is 4.11MB (4,315,136 bytes).

Could be that they've added drivers for GPS and 3G to the kernel like you say.

I can tell you that the gps option is there but it cannot be selected.

Sweet! Do you have a Bluetooth GPS device available? Either a specific device, or sharing the gps on your phone via one of the progs available in the marketplace?

I'm hoping this will become available to select when you connect the device via BT.

Thanks for checking for me btw!

Updated to 1.08 and installed the r6 pack with ONLY the small notification option. No performance pack or anything else.

Runs perfectly. Just ran quadrant and git score of 2368 which bettered any score I got on 1.06 with or without performance pack.

Also typing has now become even better with almost no erroneous double hits. Not tried it on charge yet (was bad before) will try that later.

Anyone got the USB switch app to work ? On my system it just hangs. I have tried 1.08 with and without the performance pack and both times it has failed to switch.

Just tried USB switcher and it worked fine for me.

Just typing this with the charger plugged in :-) working perfectly.

One other fix for me is the Vega no longer lags while resuming in USB host mode. That was the last annoying bug for me, everything else is gravy. :-)

Sounds like I need to drop the PP from a bake and go for the 1.8 + Modaco 1.6 - Top Show if so, though be interested to see what Paul & co bring to the table with their V1.7 release :)

Still get errors:

So is this a failure that will affect the running environment?

Yes, I can confirm much better screen responsiveness without the charger miles accurate (it actually works!). With the charger however, the same as before, unusable. This means that it is fixable and not a screen problem! with the charger it's the same which I think it's due to the charger being at fault. It has the satellites to acquire location option in settings, not able to select it though but bluetooth gps works like before with the £5 bluetooth gps from ebay. With the performance pack it works quick but too many errors about lack of storage while installing. This does not seem to affect the operation of the vega afterwards, apart from some graphics artifacts (lines on the screen). This happened with the previous firmware a bit more now. Trying to install just the flash and the google goodies without having to install the R6 but market wont launch. Installed the 1.8 again and the R6 and it's ok, not as fast as R6 with the performance pack, in my opinion. The wpa_suplicant went in fine and it now connects to ad_hoc. USB host as well and it all works fine. The first time that I installed the R6 on 1.6 it didn't root the device and I had to root it with z4root but this time I didn't need it, it rooted it with just the R6 install. Need to test the iplayer website to see if it still goes out of sync after the 30mins mark. Apart from this I don't see anything else new.

USB switcher now working. I cooked up a new ROM without the performance pack and this one did the trick. I got those busybox errors don't know what they mean.

OK new bake with small bar and no PP - seems to work a treat apart from those errors noted above

..oh and my Quadrant score was 2346 - best I've had yet from the device!

***UPDATE***

Switch host will not work...Tried reboot, tried re-running the bake overwriting the previous one (no errors on this run) tried new bake...all fail.

Think this time I give up as I need the USB stick functionality - go back to 1.6 and await the magicians :)

There's also a 'libsupl.so'... anyone know what it's used for?

SUPL - Secure User Plane Location

Assisted GPS.

Looks like this rom may enable the GPS options - yay, given a bluetooth GPS we may be able to get navigation working. Is there a "Use GPS satelites" tickbox option in settings now?

I have a fixed USB host app ready to go for 1.08... i'll post it today in the USB host app topic.

"error more than one device or emulator" when I try and run Paul's update.

checked that I have the ADB driver but doesnt seem to want to run. I have tried restarting both the vega and my windows 7 pc but it doesnt make a difference. also tried updating adb driver but it said it was up to date. not sure what to do next? Help !

Downloaded the 1.08 update earlier today, everything seemed fine but its stuck on "Formatting partition 3 PT please wait."

Its been going for the last 20 minutes or so, not sure what to do about it, worried that unplugging it or restarting will kill it completely. Any thoughts guys?
