Music Streaming to Bluetooth Speakers

Hi All,

Just got hold of an Acoustic Energy Bluetooth Speakers unit that AE are selling cheap on eBay ... great sound!

Having a few issues though ... when the Vega is in standby the setup streams & plays beautifully, however when I am using the tablet the music stutters (and I think the speed varies a little)!

I have tried a very little bit of streaming from iphone to AE speakers which, on first test, seems to stream fine!

I have a hunch that when the wifi connects thats when the issue starts!

Any help / ideas / thoughts much appreciated

I don't own a pair of Bluetooth headphones myself so I'd be interested to hear if using the app 'Super BT Mono Froyo Free' on the Market helps with this problem or not. So can one of you try it for us and report back please? I realise by the app title it only provides a mono sound but we need to establish if the quality improves first then maybe we can search for a stereo version :(

EDIT: Seems like this is a known issue and has been around with most devices affected for example this thread on the Apple site one possible solution would be to try changing the channel being used on your wi-fi router until the problem goes away

... sad news ...

changing the WiFi channel seems to make no difference (tried 3 different channels)

& Super BT Mono Froyo Free does not seem to cause any smoother play!

I did not test by rebooting my router or waiting particularly long after each particular change - its late - will be a bit more thorough and report back (tomorrow) BUT does not look like either option makes a difference at this stage :-/

Not an Advent owner yet (ordering a Webmachines UX100 soon), but I have the same problem with my Motoroi. I've done some research and it seems BT and WiFi don't play well together especially for time sensitive activities like streaming music. My solution is to turn off WiFi when using BT for music. Not ideal, but...

As Nat confirms it is a known issue on all devices this clash between BT & Wi-fi and so turning off wi-fi may be the only way to avoid it for time being or go for wi-fi headphones/speakers instead if they exist yet :(

Don't reckon Wifi / Bluetooth is incompatible ... have now tested 3 devices streaming via bluetooth to my AE bluetooth speakers:

1) Advent Vega - streaming issues

2) Linux Laptop - streaming issues

3) Applie iPhone - SMOOTH AS ... ROCK SOLID STREAMING!!! And my iPhone is constantly connected to my WiFi hub during the streaming

sooo it is obviously possible to get WiFi working with bluetooth fine!

I reckon it is some thing to do with the bluetooth device driver OR more likely perhaps some devices (like the iPhone) have some sort of "buffering" system that means the music is always smoothly supplied!?!?

This is definitely NOT a hardware issue (in the case of the vega at least) or a fundamental incompatability between bt and wifi (my Samsung Galaxy has no problems streaming audio wile browsing over 3G or wifi).

The vega does have a software issue and I reported it both here and to advent several weeks ago but got no replies. If you go back to version 1.6.05 (i think) and perservere you will get both wifi and bt working together without and hiccups, so it IS possible. However, the bt was flakey on that version if i remember correctly so you may have to reboot it several times to get it working.

Hmmm it would be interesting to know precisely how Apple have achieved it for the iPhone then when their MacBook Air is still having the issue (see link in my first post). :(

I bought a Creative D200 BT Speaker just before xmas on the strenght of reviews from tech sites and users (on Amazon etc).

Just google Creative D200 Reviews.

I was looking for something reliable as I had read about this problem.

I have been using it now with my Vega and 2 HTC Desires for about 3 months and not noticed any issues.

I think the Creative Speakers are using some newer tech than alot of other similar devices and this showed up in some of the test reviews (sony :( ).

Really good all round sound quality (no thumping bass, like you would get from a dedicated 2.1 woofer but good for this type of speaker system). :(

Really useful info!! so looks like it's a software issue for sure ... I spose :)

I don't know ... but have been playing the iphone while online on my laptop for an hour and not even one glitch! Its gotta be driver / buffer related I reckon.

Yes I did think it was a speaker related issue but have ruled that out now as the iPhone is streaming fine!

Yep - definitely a real future imo for BT speakers ... brilliant pieces of equipment ;)

Sorry guys but I am basing my opinion about compatibility issues between Bluetooth & Wireless on the evidence of my research on the matter and from an evaluation the International journal of Computer Networks & Communications did last year in this evaluation report which looks into the issue and possible ways around it. Quite how some devices work correctly and others don't is a mystery at the moment.

Well looks like what I wrote could well be wrong wrong wrong :( ... could well be a hardware issue! And therefore possibly not resolved by software driver / buffering ...

Going to read the document!

Apologies for the unfounded deductions & thanks for the info and link!

No problem at all ... it would be useful to try and establish whether there is any commonality between situations where it does and doesn't work because if there is some kind of wireless conflict going on then it might be down to how efficient each device is in terms of network connectivity. To test this out it would be really useful if someone experiencing the problem with the Vega says how far the Vega is from their wireless access point (normally the router) and what speed of router is being used i.e. 802.11b or 802.11n ?

I realise the Vega only speaks on 802.11b but the 'n' version may handle 'b' traffic slightly differently + the 'n' would be able handle other network traffic e.g. from PC quicker causing less bottlenecks in the first place.

If the router is quite some distance from the Vega can you move closer to it and re-test the Bluetooth sound reception to see if it actually improves the closer you get?

Thanks

I believe many of the issues with BT are software related, the Bluez Bluetooth stack isn't great to begin with. Many Android devices suffer from these problems when streaming music via A2DP:

- Micro-pauses at random intervals: this is usually caused when WiFi is on but not connected. Switching off WiFi off usually fixes the problem

- Pitch-shifting: This could be caused by various things such as interference with WiFi, poor Bluetooth reception or high CPU load

The Vega seems very prone to both these problems, more so in the last few ROM releases. However, I believe it can be fixed via software updates. I had the same issue on my HTC Desire. For example, when I am streaming music to my car I always had to switch off WiFi to prevent the intermittent pauses, however, after upgrading to a new ROM recently (see sig) it is no longer an issue!

Has anyone tried the ROM for PoV here:

It has improved WiFi and BT so may help

Hi Sir Gash .... if it is just software then it will be a lot easier to fix hopefully. Does the Vega version ROM: 1.08 + MCR8+PP you are on still have the problem then? Don't use bluetooth speakers myself.

Yes, the ROM I am on is probably the worst so far for A2DP! Even with WiFi switched off, I was recently getting micro-pauses and the occasional pitch-shifting issue, however, this was at work and was likely caused by interference from over devices (although my Desire and PC were fine so could be hardware issue on the Vega!). I might try again at home tonight with my Bluetooth speakers, which are actually pretty good if anyone is interested, they have the best bass for portable speakers out of the ones I have tried:

Before I took my veag back due to the dodgy speaker I spent several hours loading various stock roms on my vega in an effort to determine whether the problem I had listening to my bluetooth headphones while streaming a flash video was a hardware limitation or a sortware issue. My findings were that the latest rom at that time was better at connecting to both wifi and bluetooth at the same time, but playback was jerky and the audio had glitches. I went back to a previous rom (1.6.05 i think) and when bluetooth was conected the wifi wouldn't work at all - however with a bit of perseverence I managed to get it to stream while the headphones were connected and for a few minutes at least I had both bluetooth and wifi working flawlessly. So it's not some mystery the industry that has the industry scratching its heads - it's just a software issue that has been sorted out yet.

On hardware/software issues: It's no industry mystery on making BT and WiFi work, just some devices (read: cheaper) don't go that extra mile. In fact some devices go so far as to share a single antenna for both signals. Obviously they run into timing issues. Not saying this is specifically the case for Vega (I don't know if it is or not), but the issue has to be considered from the beginning of the hardware design stage, as well as use good device drivers, to be effective as problems often come down to transceiver placement within the device creating too much rf interference. However, I hope it's just a software issue that can be resolved quickly.

As much as I don't like the apple mentality, I always have to give them kudos for design. Good on 'em for making it work.

I can tell you for sure that there is only one discrete antenna in the Vega, and it isn't much of an antenna. I know this because my Vega is in bits at the moment :(

But yeah when you choose the wi-fi chipset, control the OS and write your own drivers its pretty easy to get everything to play together. But when you're getting a generic linux driver for a commodity chipset and you don't control the bluetooth stack, it gets harder (Almost impossible considering the razor thin margin the Vega will be making for its manufacturer)

CPU saturation will cause A2DP problems, hence flash will. Wi-fi seeking can cause CPU burps when the drivers are ropey (and the atheros chip in the Vega is far from the best)

Such is life I'm afraid

My guess, too, would be that if you had a device like, say a BT GPS receiver, you wouldn't notice the difference because the data is not especially time sensitive. In other words, the lags would still be present, just inconsequential. When listening to music, a little corrupt data never hurt anyone, but slow delivery does.

If you take a look at USB, they took this into account with isochronous data transfers - the data itself is not so important (CRC but no retry), but a timely delivery is important (bounded latency). BT does not address this issue quite as well. It allows for request and retransmission of corrupted packets. If there are a lot of corrupt packets (due to rf interference from WiFi, maybe) there is going to be a lot of non-data traffic being handled which will not necessarily be good for your audio stream. Back-up in the queue would be especially be true if BT does not have dedicated access to the channel as is the case with shared antenna. These conditions combine for jerky, lagging music when WiFi is on.

I agree with SilentMobius on this one - Such is life.

Had/have the same issues with the Samsung Galaxy S and a BT3030 stereo headset. It's almost like a Doppler stretching effect, where the music literally slows down and changes pitch at times. Really weird. I do wonder whether it's the bluetooth headset that's the problem *shrugs* maybe it's been fixed in a later hardware revision.

Oddly enough, I've not noticed the streaming issues on the Vega - so guess I'm lucky (so far ... though I haven't really used the Vega on Wifi + bluetooth as I left it streaming.) I've also not noticed it while streaming audio from my laptop.

Hi All,

just to let you know I started streaming my linux laptop this morning that was having the same issues as the Vega and it streams fine now!!!

I changed the WiFi channel on my router to 11 last night but the streaming still had issues however this morning the laptop streams fine (cant test the vega as it is ready to sell ... need funds for the moment).

So long and short is I don't have a clue if it's hardware or software issue!

However at all times the iPhone has streamed fine ... so whatever the issue there's a way round it :-)
