Hi all,

for all who want to add more or update existing Google apps when installing Cyanogenmod 7, I created a bunch of files which exactly do that.
Due to the fact that not everybody wants/needs every Google app and that not every app has to be in the system partition, I decided to provide one file for each app.

Who is this for?

People with default partition layout:
When you have a Gen1 phone (most unlikely if you use current CM7 versions) with unchanged partitions or if you updated your phone to Gen2 using the "stock" version you have the default partition layout.
Installing the Google apps into the system partition means that you can use some of the 80MB+ unused space. You will have more free space on your data partition for other apps then.

People with a changed partition layout:
Gen1 user can have a changed partition layout by applying such an layout or using wbaw's personalized partition layout,
Since CM7 is only for Gen2 phones for a long time now, you probably have updated your phone to Gen2 via TPT.
When your system partition is at least 160 MB, you can also use these packages.

How to install

Follow the steps like described in CM7 Nightlies Topic or CyanogenMod 7 Nightlies Thread!
When it comes to the installation of the Google Apps, use the following package(s) instead.

Now you have 2.5 options what you want to install:

Option 1: install updated Google Apps package

This package is based on the official package (gapps-gb-20110613-signed.zip) and contains only updates for apps which are also included there.

gapps-gb-20110815-signed.zip (md5: 38198cc800f04c7a469ee7f243302f3b):
- Market updated to 3.0.27
- Car Home fixed (added launcher) and updated to 2.2.1.4

Option 1b: install additional Google Apps

These packages contain additional apps which can be installed into the system partition (Market & Car Home are listed for the case you install the original gapps-gb-20110613-signed.zip):

gapp-market-3-0-27-signed.zip (md5: b3ccda0277a2d5fc2b7630d79e79e66e): updates Market to version 3.0.27
gapp-carhome-2-2-1-4-signed.zip (md5: b54a1cd58c50c4507b02b433e5c5ec68): fixes (added launcher) and updates Car Home to version 2.2.1.4

If you like you can delete some apps you don't want to install from the directory system/app in the zip file before flashing it:
- BooksPhone.apk = Google Books
- CarHomeGoogle.apk = Car Home
- Gmail.apk = Gmail
- GoogleDocs.apk = Google Docs
- GooglePlus.apk = Google+
- Maps.apk = Google Maps
- Street.apk = Street View on Google Maps
- Translate.apk = Google Translate
- googlevoice.apk = Google Voice
- VoiceSearch.apk = Voice Search
- YouTube.apk = YouTube
WARNING: DO NOT DELETE ANY OTHER FILES EXCEPT YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU ARE DOING!

RemarksIn case of option 1b do not forget to install a package from option 1 or gapps-gb-20110729-signed.zip. The file contains some libs and helper apps needed for Google apps.
Install the the apps directly after gapps-gb-<date>-signed.zip. OneTimeInitializer will then see that they are already installed.Keep in mind that the apps are installed into /system/app and NOT into /data/app! This is especially important for people who have shrunk their system partition, e.g. with TPT NAND Backup & Partition Tool or use a custom layout. The full packages need a 160 MB system partition!When market installs updates, use the batch "Integrate updates of system apps into ROM" in Titanium Backup (see TB - Technical FAQ Topic 23).
Feel free to ask any questions or to post your comments or suggestions!

Original Post

I know that Google doesn't allow the CM team to integrate the Google apps into their roms.
The current way (providing gapps-gb-yyyymmdd-signed.zip) is totally OK and easy to install.
But I'd like to have the other Google apps, e.g. Gmail, Maps, and so on, also installed when flashing a nightly + gapps - instead of downloading them afterwards from the market.

There are 3 possible ways which come to my mind:
1. Adding the other apps to cm_blade_full-nn.zip
2. Adding the other apps to gapps-gb-yyyymmdd-signed.zip
3. Adding the content of gapps-gb-yyyymmdd-signed.zip + the other apps to cm_blade_full-nn.zip

What would be the best way and how can I achieve this?

For your help many thanks in advance!

Best regards

I can't comment on the best way, but you can add whatever APKs you want installed to \system\app inside the cm_blade zip, and they will get installed on flash.

You can also just copy & paste all folders from the gapps zip in the cm_blade zip if you want the third option.

Is it really that easy?

Doesn't every file in the zip file need to be listed with its SHA1-Digest in CERT.SF and MANIFEST.MF?

What about the updater-script in gapps-gb-yyyymmdd-signed.zip? i mean, there a line:

delete("/system/app/CarHomeLauncher.apk", "/system/app/GenieWidget.apk",  "/system/app/Gmail.apk",  "/system/app/GoogleBackupTransport.apk",  "/system/app/GoogleCalendarSyncAdapter.apk",  "/system/app/GoogleContactsSyncAdapter.apk",  "/system/app/GoogleFeedback.apk",  "/system/app/GooglePartnerSetup.apk",  "/system/app/GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk",  "/system/app/QuickSearchBox.apk",  "/system/app/GoogleServicesFramework.apk",  "/system/app/googlevoice.apk",  "/system/app/kickback.apk",  "/system/app/LatinImeTutorial.apk",  "/system/app/Maps.apk",  "/system/app/MarketUpdater.apk",  "/system/app/MediaUploader.apk",  "/system/app/NetworkLocation.apk",  "/system/app/OneTimeInitializer.apk",  "/system/app/SetupWizard.apk",  "/system/app/Provision.apk",  "/system/app/soundback.apk",  "/system/app/Street.apk",  "/system/app/Talk.apk",  "/system/app/talkback.apk",  "/system/app/Vending.apk",  "/system/app/VoiceSearch.apk",  "/system/app/YouTube.apk", "/system/etc/permissions/com.google.android.maps.xml",  "/system/etc/permissions/features.xml",  "/system/framework/com.google.android.maps.jar",  "/system/lib/libmicrobes_jni.so",  "/system/lib/libvoicesearch.so");

I know, so many questions... :D

I have not looked into the APK signing literature at all, but I do know that at least deleting and adding APKs in the \system\apps folder works :D

Quite possibly the update script for the CM zip installs everything in that folder recursively, haven't checked.

I think I'm gonna try to add the apps to the gapps zip file. This way it doesn't matter if they will be deleted from the phone's system partition because they are copied afterwards again.

Now I only need to find out where to get the latest APKs from.

Could I use the ones from the phone (eg. /data/app/com.google.android.apps.maps-1.apk)?

Thanks for your reply, shadowninty.

Still I have some questions:

1. If I replace Google Market (Vending.apk) with the latest version, should I delete the SHA1 hashes in CERT.SF and MANIFEST.MF for it?

2. Are there any specific naming conventions for the Google apps used in all/many roms when installed in /system/app?

Here is my current (incomplete) list:

Google Maps: com.google.android.apps.maps-1.apk -> Maps.apk

Street View on Google Maps: com.google.android.street-1.apk -> Street.apk

YouTube: com.google.android.youtube-1.apk -> YouTube.apk

Voice Search: com.google.android.voicesearch-1.apk -> VoiceSearch.apk

Gmail: com.google.android.gm-1.apk -> Gmail.apk

Google Voice: com.google.android.apps.googlevoice-1.apk -> googlevoice.apk

Google Books: com.google.android.apps.books-1.apk -> BooksPhone.apk

What about

Google Sky Map: com.google.android.stardroid-1.apk -> ???

Google Translate: com.google.android.apps.translate-1.apk -> ???

Google Goggles: com.google.android.apps.unveil-1.apk -> ???

Again, thanks in advance!

Some apps don't work if you install them that way. Swiftkey for example, and some others that I can't remember now.

It's not that I want to install every app I use into /system. :D

I just want to integrate the common Google apps like Gmail, Maps, etc. which are missing in gapps-gb-yyyymmdd-signed.zip.

This can save some traffic when trying out the different nightlies. And it saves some people from having to install market enabler before they can install Gmail, just because Google doesn't offer it for certain country-provider combinations.

I have trouble with installing the gapps with market.

I select all the gapps I want and click next. Then I get an error telling me a file was not found and I end up without any gapps! Please help!

I'm just packing and signing the additional Google Apps.

I decided to name

Google Sky Map: com.google.android.stardroid-1.apk -> SkyMap.apk

Google Translate: com.google.android.apps.translate-1.apk -> Translate.apk

Currently I have created the following update packages:

gapp-books-1-2-2-signed.zip: updates Google Books to version 1.2.2

gapp-gmail-2-3-4-1-signed.zip: installs Gmail 2.3.4.1

gapp-goggles-1-3-1-signed.zip: installs Google Goggles 1.3.1

gapp-maps-5-2-1-signed.zip: installs Google Maps 5.2.1

gapp-market-2-3-4-signed.zip: updates Market to version 2.3.4

gapp-skymap-1-6-1-signed.zip: installs Google Sky Map 1.6.1

gapp-streetview-1-6-0-6-signed.zip: installs Street View on Google Maps 1.6.0.6

gapp-translate-2-0-0-signed.zip: installs Google Translate 2.0.0

gapp-voice-0-4-2-24-signed.zip: installs Google Voice 0.4.2.24

gapp-voicesearch-2-1-1-signed.zip: installs Voice Search 2.1.1

gapp-youtube-2-1-6-signed.zip: installs YouTube 2.1.6

Now I have to test them.

If you are interested I can release the zip files after testing.

@iKrautDroid, you may not select Gmail, since it is probably not available for your country-provider combination. You can install all other apps though. After that, install "market enabler" and set your provider to "T-Mobile (us)". Then you'll find Gmail in the market.

This looks great! Good Work.

I'm going to try this once the new nightly comes out.

I used wbaw's partition mod... So space on /system will be low... Will all this fit?

After wiping/resetting and installing CM7 + gapps-gb-20110307-signed.zip + 0+n of my zips, the setup wizard will start when using the new rom the first time. There are options for creating a new Google account, logging in using an existing acount and skipping that step. If you skipped the step, you can add a new account or your existing account in system settings -> Accounts & sync.

When using my packages or any Google apps in general, make sure you have installed gapps-gb-20110307-signed.zip before. Else some basic libs and helper apps are missing.

Ah yes, Google Books and Google Voice won't probably work outside the US anyway. :(

I used wbaw's partition mod... So space on /system will be low... Will all this fit?

I don't think so. The updates for the market and Google Books can be flashed without any worries because the both are included in the CM Gapps package anyway and they are just replaced by newer versions. Unfortunately I didn't write down the exact system size after flashing all additional apps. I did the tests on a friend's phone because it was a fresh (but still Gen1) phone without any data and it wouldn't have been no pain to reflash.

So, before flashing a new nightly and installing some of the packages, I advice you to use "blade_backup_alpha3_return_to_stock.zip" (see TPT NAND Backup & Partition Tool). After that install the new nightly, apply some packages and use "blade_backup_alpha3_nocache_auto_10.zip" to reduce the system partition again. That's the way I will do it when the next nightly (or perhaps even RC3 :D ) will be released.

For us partition mod users it more or less doesn't matter if we install the Google apps into system or data, since the free space afterwards is the same anyway. It makes a lot of sense for users using the default partition layout, because there it is really a waste of space installing the Google apps into data.

The main reason I started to create these files is that Google hasn't enabled Gmail for my country-provider combination. And the current way how to get Gmail (adding my Google account, not choosing Gmail in the OneTimeInitializer, installing market enabler, setting a different provider and then install Gmail from the market) is just too much pain in the ass in my opinion.

That said, my packages do nothing which can't be done by installing these apps on data via the market. It's just another option. :D

Thanks for the heads up regarding install method.

These additional google apps updated and bundled together like this was a great idea :D

Since the Google apps package contains a broken version of Google Car Home (one apk is missing) I created a package which fixes that and updates to version 2.2.1.4.

The file is online and can be downloaded. I also changed the installation instruction to fit the new option(s).

This worked a treat :D

Could you also include Facebook, Google Chrome to Phone, Kickback, Soundback, Talkback and Twitter as well?

I just logged into a fresh ROM install and It's saying these are the remaining apps to install

I understand that not everyone would want these included, but hey.., They could remove them B)

Good work on this though!

cheers mate, this will benefit many people.

one question? does it include the standard gapps package like we discussed? [this: gapps-gb-20110307-signed] or not?

my vote: don't include stuff like this, they are standard apps which people should download if they want them. these things are not gapps and thus shouldn't be in a gapps package.

Of course! gapps-gb-20110401-signed.zip is based on gapps-gb-20110307-signed.zip. All the libs and helper apps are unchanged.

I just added the extra apps and updated Market, Books & Car Home.

Google Chrome to Phone, Kickback, Soundback are Talkback Google apps.

If I decide to add them I think it's time to start thinking about a Java program which can build a personalized zip file with the Google apps you select. :D

Jay, no offence meant, but I have to disappoint you on the Facebook app. It is just no Google app.

Also I don't want to have to do anything with Facebook. I never had a FB account, never will have one and I don't want to support them in any way.
