Permanent root for 2.2 Blades!

Here's a modified version of z4root where I made some changes to make permanent root work on Blades.

Only tested on official Telia Sonera 2.2 but should work on all 2.2 (and 2.1 Blades).

Included in the zip is the modified z4root app + the only source file I changed.

Original z4root source that was used is the one found here: http://code.google.com/p/z4root/

Instructions

  • Install the apk (put on sd-card and use "Filer")
  • Enable "USB debugging"
  • Start app and tell it to do a permanent root.
  • Wait for it to reboot your phone.
  • Have fun!

EDIT 2011-04-16: ver2 attached. This version keeps a copy of the original su and busybox binaries and restores them if you choose to unroot, leaving no visible traces on /system (unless you've modified /system yourself while being rooted)

If anyone tries this on a stock 2.1 then please report if it worked (it should but as I've converted to Gen2 I cannot test it myself).

Is this safe? Because I've downloaded it and Microsoft Security Essentials warned me immediately that this is an exploit. Exploit:Unix/Lotoor

I think it is, because you have to do "nasty" things to get root access to the system and MSE recognized it as a threat. BTW it's interesting, Microsoft warns you about a Google/Android 'hack' :)

The file it warns about is this one: http://code.google.com/p/z4root/source/bro...eagainstthecage

It's the exploit used to get root access so that the su binary and Superuser.apk can be installed.

If you google "rageagainstthecage" you'll find a bunch of guides on how to use it to root Android phones using adb.

Actually it does warn you for a good reason. If you were downloading an ordinary app that contained this binary it would most likely be a trojan app. However in this case the goal is to hack the phone.

Is it possible to unroot?

Surely if you've got any worries about the 'need' to unroot you'd just be using the temporary root option? :)

Is it possible to unroot after a permant root?

A valid question. I'll check the unroot code to see if it will still unroot after my changes to the permanent root code.

EDIT: From the looks of it unrooting should work. However for the trained eye it will leave traces. Not sure it matters but I've made a new version that backup and restore the original su and busybox and removes /system/xbin (if empty) when unrooting. Will post it when I've had time to reflash to a stock ROM to test it.

So there's no real difference between this & the Superuser app that comes with Swedish Spring?

I dont think Swedish Spring is a Stock rom, z4root replaces androot, helping stock roms be rooted permanently so apps that require root can be used

It's the same su + app that is used but there is of course a difference between just rooting the stock ROM and installing a customized ROM like SS. But from a rooting perspective it's pretty much the same. Swedish Spring also has ro.secure set to 0 which automaticly give you root when using adb so you don't have to use su when working through adb.

But the differences between this and other rooting methods for the blade is this:

Universal Androot - Does not work on 2.2 Blades and unless I remember it wrong it does not survive a reboot.

z4root - Only temporary root works.

z4root (modified for the Blade) - Permanent root works and survives a reboot.

But since many people just root to be able to flash clockwork recovery and install a custom ROM and made an app this weekend that uses the z4root method of getting root access but instead of installing root app + binary it flashes clockwork and reboots: http://android.modaco.com/content/zte-blad...testers-needed/
