O2X on T-Mobile USA

Bought my O2X / P990 in the Caribbean, and I'm using it on T-Mobile USA in South Florida, in known 3g/4g coverage areas - but the phone only ever shows EDGE service? It never jumps to any higher speed data! (I am on a TMo Android Data Plan).

When I called T-Mobile, they say I show up as an "unknown device" - not a O2x or a P999(G2x) -

I'm running CWM & MCR Fr12 - (LG P990, V10b), latest baseband 1035.21_20110405, along with a new SIM (swapped last week).

Any ideas on why I'm being limited to EDGE service? It's driving me nuts! Anybody who works for TMobile care to weigh in (and hopefully tell me what I need to say to TMo tech support to get my phone "enabled" for 3G service?!).

tmobile usa doesnt use the same 3g frequencies as most parts of the world, so a o2x (non usa) will not give you 3g in usa and g2x (usa) will not give you 3g outside usa.

there are some phones that support both, but thats not too common unfortunately.

My phone packaging lists WCDMA 900/1900/2100 & GSM 850/900/1800/1900. (= Euro 3G Frequencies?)

I just looked up the T-Mo 3G Frequencies, and sure enough, I'd have to support AWS IV = 1700 as well.

Looks like I'm SOL unless someone figures out whether the P990 / P999 have different physical radio chips or if it's just a matter of unlocking certain bands in different markets.

Perhaps it's only a software lock then, but I don't believe it's the same physical chip since the o2x doesn't claim to support hspa+ like the g2x does.

You should be getting 3G at least in some areas as TMO US supports W2100 MHz and your phone does too.

Maybe you should check why your phone presents itself as unknown to the network or if TMO are blocking it for some reason.

So why dont you start with the IMEI number and make sure the one in the phone is same to the one u had on your box or on the sticker under your battery. Second, where did you get your phone from official store or....?

Wrong.... Band I is commonly used band pretty much all around e world.

TMO US also running their network on W2100 or band 1, therefore most of the mobiles using European frequencies 900/2100 will operate in TMO 3G network at some places, depends on the coverage of TMO's 2100 .

I'm located in South Florida at the moment (Fort Lauderdale / 33316) - I purchased my P990 at "Boolchands" - a very old Caribbean Electronics chain that specializes in "Grey Market" Electronics, which are commonly sold duty free to cruise ship passengers - My phone software is the latest available MCR Fr12 / 20110405 Baseband -

When I spoke to T-Mo Tech Support - They said my phone was showing as "unknown type" but the IMEI # that my phone is reporting is correct in their system. I am in a confirmed T-Mo 3G Coverage Area - but no such luck connecting to it... Here's hoping that it's an issue limited to South Florida?!

What's the first digit of your IMEI, 3 or 0

I hope you figure it out. Im going to be using my O2X on my holiday to the states this summer. May I ask how fast your internet is on Edge, if you do the speedtest.net or something like it? It should be around 384kb/s as far as I can read.

Its odd that the 2100mhz band doesnt work. In Denmark the US Version of Nexus S works on 3G, so I was hoping it would work both ways..

My experience in the USA with the O2x on 3G is limited to S. Florida (Fort Lauderdale & Miami) - So I don't know if it's a local issue, or if I'm stuck on EDGE everywhere.

On the Speedtest.net App - Ping ~ 341ms, Down ~ 180kbps & Up ~ 90kbps. (testing to the Orlando, FL server).

Try getting into the HiddenMenu of the O2x and play around with the WCDMA frequency there. Good luck.
