The Xperia PLAY experience

Since being handed the PLAY it has made a firm impression in my gaming routine. With it's 854 x 480 resolution screen (compare that to 3DS at 800 x 240 and PSP at 480 x 240), full Playstation controls under it's hardy sliding screen and a catalogue of titles containing the classics that are Crash Bandicoot and Wipeout plus the newly added Battlefield: Bad Company 2 you can appreciate why.

This is the place where you will find all the Play related news and reviews.

Whilst the six pre-installed games on the Xperia PLAY are a sweet selection I have now played them to death. Crash Bandicoot got my attentions first and I almost completed it (again :P) as the game transfered so beautifully from the original Playstation. Graphics are bright and pop off the back-lit LED screen and gameplay is fluid with smooth and responsive controls. After wearing out my thumbs to the PS1 classic I turned my immersion to Bruce Lee Dragon Warrior. Being one the most demoed games on the PLAY I had to have a look see. A game you do need to see for yourself but don't expect it to make you feel like a kung fu master and there are framerate issues. It would appear the AI has been eating his spinach, either that or pumping up on steroids. The only way I got close to winning was button smashing... there go my thumbs again. Next up came Asphalt 6: Adrenaline which is available just about everywhere from DS to PSP and everything inbetween so I wasn't expecting anything new. I was right. OK so it has plenty of variety within the game but racing fans looking for a new experience have come to the wrong place. It was the same with the also pre-installed Sims 3. If you are a fan then it is a handheld pleasure trip for you guys... if not, steer clear. It does showcase the XP's technical mastery but little else regarding gaming experience.

The XP does make even the dullest game ... (Star Battalion) look like a visual masterpiece and I am sure my thumbs will harden up to the Playstation control pad.

There are many more titles to download and within Android > Software - Gaming you will find all the links you need to free games and reviewed titles.

Here are some tasty looking pictures of the XPLAY in a bold burnt orange colour :-)

The finish on the orange PLAY is matt which obviously increases grip on the device. Handy when gaming.

and side by side with the XPLAY in white

Yes he began to drool when they were shown off last night... then it was fight to the death (on Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit) to win one.

btw Need For Speed is an Xperia PLAY exclusive and the review of it's demo will be up tomorrow. I can't put the game down long enough to write about it!

I have only heard whispers of hearsay when it comes to the Playstation Suite for the Xperia PLAY but today at the Tokyo Game Show and during the Keynote speech I can confirm that Sony will be sorting out the SDK for cross platform for November. So the somewhat weak catalogue we have at the moment will be taking a massive injection of c# developer know how over the next few months! Great news.

Full press release below:

Furthermore, SCE will provide a variety of content towards these PS Certified devices from end October through PlayStation®Store*2 on PlaySation®Network, starting with original PlayStation games (PS one® classics). The service will start in nine countries including Japan, United States, Canada, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Australia and with more countries to follow. In next spring, SCE will enhance the PS Store for PS Certified devices and provide content created by PS Suite SDK, further prevailing the world of PS Suite.

Through PS Suite, SCE will deploy various measures to support content developers in their business for rapidly prevailing Android based portable devices and will expand the PlayStation entertainment experience on an open operating system.

A friend of mine was looking into picking up the Xperia Play for her son. He is totally into gaming and this looks like a great compromise between phone and gaming system. As I am the tech junkie, I'm the one doing all the research but of course I don't mind that. :P

Any issues or flaws that she should be aware of? So far the reviews I've read have been pretty good.

TProfit - It's a great compromise. What a lucky lad!

As a mobile gaming device, the Xperia PLAY is average, say compared to the PSP. The gaming library is getting more concise and I am sure 2012 will see more and more titles being added. The games that are available right now really showcase the capabilities of the handset and never fail to impress. Add the fact that it is a mobile 'phone to the equation and it becomes an impressive bit of kit. With prices diving to under £150, and with only minor issues to consider, I highly recommend the Xperia PLAY to any gaming addict.
