Here are links to a few SIM Unlocking Cards for locked phones on ebay, I've never used them before so I have several questions,

1- DO they work on the OMC / Skate?
2- If so do they only work with normal GSM  connection or 3G also?
3- DO they shorten battery life.

I have tried 2 different ones.
They kind of work I could text and call, and but my OMC thought it was roaming .
I could get no internet access at all

Even if you enable roaming ? (Its to be expected that that would happen).

Yes even if i enabled data while roaming, also all of the APN's vanished so i could not edit anything, i figured it was part of the  Orange lockdown, tried with a Tmobile sim and a GiffGaff sim.

No he means did you enable data roaming. Also did you try and add the APNs manually?

I worded it wrong data while roaming was enabled.

so in conclusion absolutely no 3G internet possible with a sim unlock card...which rules it out completely, what good is a smartphone without mobile internet...
