Yeah, so it's my 54th b'day on Sat 10th and I bought myself a ZTE Blade - San Fransisco. Mr Pigfish tells me it's a Gen1 sold with Android 2.1 - Eclair. I have unlocked from Orange and now on O2

I bought my Blade on the 5th after reading great reviews. Links from that review led me to this very impressive forum.

Now I want to join in the fun by upgrading my Blade. Maybe to a Gen 2 possibly with Froyo or Gingerbread. Is this a good plan??

I really need help and advice. I started reading the guides that were posted last year but it seems things have moved on so much that I do not know what to do now.

So, can someone tell me what the latest thinking is and how best to upgrade my Blade.

At the risk of sounding old and boring myself :) Before you get to the fun, its a good idea to back up anything you'd like to keep i.e. contacts, texts etc. There are apps in the android market that can back these up to sdcard or the internet.

My suggestion is to go for gingerbread for performance and features. Froyo is possible slightly better for battery life.

Gen2 is a prerequisite for some froyo and all gingerbread upgrades (roms).

The easiest method is using an all-in-one tpt. I am using ginger stir fry so I would recommend this particular rom, and you can find an all-in-one tpt on the page here. Make sure to follow the instructions, there is a small amount of risk involved if something goes wrong.

Thanks for your reply, I must say I was hopping for a lot more replies.

Before I get in too deep tho' I thought I might first try and remove those annoying bundled Orange apps.

So I downloaded and installed Universal Androot and Superuser, however Superuser has a fault. I now need to remove it. How does one know if Androot is working? What does it do and where is the evedence that it is doing anything?

Most importantly tho', how do I remove unwanted Orange apps? I need something that is SIMPLE for a NOOB to do and that REALLY works.

thanks to those who reply

p.s. the phone is a b10, meaning the volume button thing does nothing during boot or whatever, and there is nothing to back-up

Definately get an app called Titanium Backup from the market. This is virtually a must-have app. This will tell you if your phone is rooted. It may just be that phone has not been rooted already hence the fault with superuser.

If you wish to remove orange apps, titanium backup can do this, but it is a paid feature. As I said its a must-have app so I would recommend buying it. You can use this to backup the orange apps (if you wish), and remove them using a long-press on its list of apps.

If you decide you want to go the route of installing a custom rom for gingerbread, there is no need to root or remove orange apps, as this will all be done with the all-in-one tpt mentioned above.

Dont be upset by the lack of responses, the ZTE blade/Orange San francisco forums here are lively and busy, but people dont want to frequent the beginners forum much :/

Thanks again for your reply

I think I will bypass the Titanium Backup and go straight for the jugular.

So TPT is the way forward then? OK

The guide I have been reading is by *wbaw* ..................(AS FOLLOWS)

This will convert your Gen1 phone to Gen2 & boot into ClockworkMod for you to install your rom. You will lose your data. Make any backups you want first. Gen1 nandroid backups wont restore on a Gen2 phone. Always check MD5s, one way to do it is to download AFV (Android File Verifier) from the Android Market, search for AFV.

It is for European Gen1 ZTE Blades, Orange San Franciscos, Sapo A5s & Base Luteas sold with Android 2.1 Eclair only. None of the downloads on this page will work if your phone was sold with or operator upgraded to Android 2.2 Froyo. In that case, you already have the upgraded radio firmware. This is a safer alternative to the operator 2.2 upgrades which keeps some of the good features of Gen1 (like fastboot mode, tpt mode & extra storage space), but upgrades everything necessary to run Gen2 Android 2.2 Froyo & Android 2.3 Gingerbread roms.

Custom rom version (should work well with most custom roms, more room for your apps & data)

Download: Gen1-to-Gen2-TPT-v8-custom.zip mirror mirror mirror mirror mirror mirror

Download size: 16.05mb

MD5: 35581040f3af0387af502e80cdcaf364

SHA1: 3958e25c3a1a6f3ed982318f5bd70c8369a82981

Partitions: 2mb cache, 160mb system, 294mb data, 0.1mb oem

OK so far

Instructions

Copy a Gen2 rom zip file to your sd card ready to install. Check the md5sum of that against the source (you can use AFV for this).

Unzip this Gen2 TPT zip file to your sd card, it should create an image directory.

Check the nandroid.md5 file in the image directory on your sd card using AFV on your phone (long press on nandroid.md5 file, then Verify Nandroid Backup)

Power off, wait a few seconds, then power on with menu & vol+ held.

this is were the problem arises, I have the b10 version of the ZTE BLade and according to other guides the menu & vol + held combo no longer works with this particular phone.

Thats the spirit.

The link you were looking at above converts gen1 to gen2 but does not include the rom, so you would need to download and install that separately. I would suggest using instead this link http://android.modac...inger-stir-fry/ , specifically the section:

Gen1 to Gen2 All-in-one custom rom upgrade TPT

This is an all in one rom + gen2 radio firmware + clockworkmod install for 'Gen1' ZTE Blades & Orange San Franciscos which were sold with Android 2.1 (Eclair). It will upgrade your phone to Gen2 radio firmware, install the rom & the latest ClockworkMod all in one step, even on unrooted phones.

To install: Unzip the file to the root of your sdcard, it will create an 'image' folder. Check the integrity of the files using AFV (available from android market) to find the nandroid.md5 file in the image directory, then long press on it & verify nandroid backup. Turn off your phone, leave it for at least 30 seconds, then hold menu & volume + when you power it on. You should see some green text (may be just a blank screen) then it should reboot & you should see a big android while it is performing it's first boot (this will take a while). Once it has successfully started up don't forget to delete the image folder on your sd card, to prevent any accidents.

Ginger Stir Fry Beta 23 Gen1 to Gen2 Upgrade TPT

Download: gsf-blade-b23-tpt.zip mirror mirror mirror mirror

Download size: 101.89mb

MD5: eef5ae27d1324051637e7d90cce32828

SHA1: 5e47ce48f79ff841b16efebc4f04712d45d6f167

Make sure to check the MD5 as described to ensure the integrity of the file, and that your phone is fully charged, but disconnected from the charger when initiating the TPT. If you are concerned that your phone doesnt accept the menu/vol+/power combo then it will simply boot as normal so no harm done. If for whatever reason the rom doesnt work for you the process is reversible.

what a carry on I've had with those buttons, Power on, menu and vol +.

I tried about 5 times to boot from the image, and no sucess, it booted back in to the old Eclair 2.1

The the thing was doing my head in. I gave up trying and I was at my PC and about 7pm I thought i would try it one more time.

Low and bloody behold it worked. Now I have

1-build number = Ginger Stir Fry Beta 23

2-kernal version = 2.6.35.7-perf+zte-kernal@Zdroid-SMT

3-baseband version = P729B01

4-android version = 2.3.4

now to play and see if I can't brick the bugger....lol...joking

Thanks for all your help

Good work, glad you tried that one more time. I'd suggest some cleanup: delete that 'image' folder on your sdcard to make sure that you cant accidentally reflash the whole thing (it happens). In future if you decide to have another go at upgrading/changing roms, you'll most likely need to use a different method: clockworkmod, just so you know.

And happy birthday old man.
