I managed to get my hands on a ZTE Tureis and the one thing I've noticed is that fastboot mode seems not to work...

I can reboot the device into fastboot, but then there seems to be no USB support, I've tried it on my MAC and Linux box, and its just not registering...   I also noticed there is no USB support when you reboot into recovery mode...

It is running Android 2.3.5 so that's going to be tricky to resolve..

Someone bought one for me from eBay, I think it was £130.

The lack of a working bootloader, and the the lack of a 2.3.5 root exploit (until the teamjoch exploit is in the wild) there is not a lot we can do with the device.

Have you tried rooting with zergRush (Think it supports 2.3.5)

Thing there has been a few tweaks to zergRush to make it more reliable.
