Is there a simple way to change the emoticons in the Streak other than pulling the framework-res.apk and reflashing it?

After a year and a half, I'm starting to get bored with the little green android smileys and am looking for something new.  But the only way I can see to get them changed is to re-pack the framework-res.  Is this the only option?
