Fubarred Vega

I did what seems to be a fairly common thing from my last few hours of searching and dropped my Vega last night. Fell off the kitchen worktop and landed on its corner. The casing itself was fine, but both the glass screen and LCD screen cracked, leaving the tablet unusable. It still boots and cycles through, but half the screen is knackered.

I've been fiddling about with it today. I'm fairly competent when it comes to electronics, so I thought I'd have a go at fixing it after reading this thread by richardmlea: http://android.modac...nt-test-it-yet/ , but it wasn't until I got down to the screen that I realised that the touchpanel is part of the glass itself.

I was quite surprised how easily this comes apart, I was expecting something along the lines of stripping a laptop down, but it's far, far easier and has just a few seperate parts. The only really annoying part is all the tape and sticky substances used, but a heatgun and blade made short work of it.

Anyway, the main reason for my post is to ask what you guys think can be done with it? I will be ordering a new Vega over the next few weeks unless a faulty one with an ok screen turns up on eBay; but is there anything else I could use it for other than spare parts?

Cheers.

You could split it up and sell off parts for spares. Probably worth selling the following separately:

  • Battery
  • Motherboard
  • Case and mountings
  • Speakers and camera
  • SD Card

You might get a decent price for the battery, I'd personally bid for the case and mountings. Someone was after the motherboard recently, so that could work. But if you're going to get a new one, why not keep them? Could come in handy.

I didn't actually consider splitting it, but good thinking as I may get more for it that way. I'll reply back here if I do decide to go that way and give you first dibs on the case and mountings. It may have been richard who I mentioned in my post above who was after the motherboard, but he's since got hold of one.

But ye, I think you're right about keeping hold of it. It's only a few months old so there's plenty of life left in the parts, battery and whatnot. But it would lessen the financial side of it if I get something in return for this after having to shell out for another. Hmmm, decisions!

If you sell it in one piece then three guys who might buy three separate bits will have to bid against each other.

Odds are the three bits that are usually of interest are the panel, the motherboard or the screen anyway.
