Facebook have released the long overdue redesign to their Android app.

The most obvious difference is the new UI, which now matches the iOS version and that of their mobile site. In terms of new functionality, the app now boasts "advanced" photo tagging support, improved upload speed, support for games and an overhaul of notifications which now appear at the top of the screen - easily the most helpful new feature. Navigation around the app is much easier since the previous incarnation, utilising a top bar which mimics the one seen on the full site.

Not all of the changes are for the better, however. While behaviour is improved on Ice Cream Sandwich contact sync still isn't functional and the app is slow and prone to crashing or locking up - even on a dual core device. At times we found it chewing through CPU while running idle and it still saps battery life, which is a major disappointment.

So, all in all, despite the dramatic changes, it only offers slight improvements over the previous version. More work is required both cosmetically and under the hood to make it as functional as its competitors and time needs to be spent resolving the issue of persistent battery drain. Fingers crossed an update in the near future will begin to address these points.

I wrote this the day it came out, but we have just been clearing up some of the backlog of posts, as well as getting me and the other new guys settled in our roles. Hopefully news speed will start picking up in a few days :)
