Bricked my PoV Mobii

Guest PaulJB

Recommended Posts

I have been playing around with this Vega clone for about a month now, I had installed android market without a hitch and left it till the holidays to update the rom. I had already done a phone so had a general idea and looked around on the net for roms and instructions.

I rooted the phone with z4root and installed Rom Manager, I decided I should back up the current rom to my sd card but as soon as i selected backup current rom and the screen went blank, i waited and nothing happened. I have tried to boot in to recovery mode using the back and power keys.

I have read that its near impossible to brick the vega, i guess the mobii is not so resilient.

Any ideas gratefully received,

Paul

Hi paul, There was no need to root it. vegas and there clones dont need it.

You may be aware of this but just in case....

The Back button power thing dosent get you into Clockworkmod/rom manager recovery it puts the vega/clone into NVflash recovery mode. You wont see anything on screen (not even the back light) and you will need to use a Pc to flash a fresh rom to the tablet.

This is not correct - Advent Vegas do not come rooted.

They do not have the SU binary installed, or BUSYBOX, or the SuperUser.apk installed...

Hi, PaulJB...

This is what I would do with an Advent Vega... I assume the procedure would be similar, if not identical for a PoV Mobii...

To get your Vega up and running again, you will need to enter nvFLASH RECOVERY MODE...

If you haven't already done so, you will need to download the Windows USB System driver (available here www.myadventvega.co.uk )

Download it, and extract it to a folder on you PC (eg., C:\ADVENT)

Download the Advent Vega STOCKROM from here http://www.myadventvega.co.uk

But you might be better off downloading the MODDED STOCKROM, which DOES come pre-rooted (and will RESECT the DATA/SYSTEM partitions - which will be needed when you come to install VegaComb... which sooner or later you will probably want to!)

The MODDED STOCKROM (V2) is available http://www.multiupload.com/CI2NZASSJ9

Connect your Vega to your PC, via a USB cable.

Connect your Vega to the mains, via the charger.

On the Vega, effect a FORCED POWERDOWN by long pressing (6 seconds) the POWERBUTTON.

Now to enter nvFLASH RECOVERY MODE...

Press and hold the BACKBUTTON for 2 seconds

Still holding the BACKBUTTON, press the POWERBUTTON for 2 seconds

...and release...

But continue to hold the BACKBUTTON for a further 2 seconds.

Upon succesfull completion of this key press sequence, your PC will either direct you to install the USB System driver (in which case, point it to the folder as detailed above)...

...or it will 'ping' the 'found new hardware sound'

Now, on your PC, you can double click on the MODDEDSTOCK .exe (or whatever ROM you wish to nvFLASH)

what I said is correct. Read what I said again. I didnt say that vega's come rooted, I said you dont need to root it (yourself). Installing moddedstock gives you SU and root access and its just one NVflash away so why root it yourself?

And we have free acsess to the bootloader (so we can flash any rom we like).

While thats not acucually gaining access to the root directory that's not what most people want, they want to flash custom roms. If access to the root directory was removed from vegacomb most people wouldnt notice as they dont go into it that deep.

Maybe you didn't say it explicitly, but it was implied...

...and PaulJB probably doesn't know any of this this stuff about BOOTLOADERS, MODDED STOCK, CWM RECOVERY... I didn't know any of this when I started...

I had never even heard of MODDED STOCK... much less that it was pre-ROOTED.

Paul did exactly what I did... understood that ROOTING was a prerequisite for FLASHING a custom rom..

...and installed Z4Root... ran CWM...

And wound up with a BRICKED BOX...

If there is a criticism to be levelled at the Modding community, is the assumption that everybody knows everything... and when you're a newbie, it's a bit scary...

It wasnt in any way implied.

His goal was to install a custom rom.

Do do this root access is not needed.

I said "There was no need to root it."

This is not implying that vega's come pre-rooted.

Maybe I should have said "There was no need to root it to install a custom rom." but as his goal was to install a custom rom I assumed that was implied.

People confuse rooting with installing a custom rom.

He's not using a Vega. As the thread title says POV Mobii :P

Mind you he then refers to it as a phone :)

Then mentions installing ROM manager and isn't that considered to be a very bad idea?

Should have gone straight for installing a new Rom as that's no more difficult than going through

the procedure of rooting it and installing the market.

Yes

The result Advent Vega/P10AN01/Shuttle/POVmobi/TegraTab wont boot and require's re-flashing (i'm going to call it that from now on to save confusion :D )

If you're FLASHING something like MoDaCoR8 or CORVUS5 on a new Vega (or Mobil), then Z4ROOT and CWM ROM MANAGER is the way to go... you only need to nvFLASH MODDED STOCK if you need a bigger SYSTEM PARTITION for something like VegaComb.

Thanks guys for taking the time to reply, I will be trying to sort my fubar out once I get some piece and quiet (and sobriety) in the new year.

Paul

dont get scared by the terminology ...

i have a pov mobii and its impossible to brick the thing (i have flashed it with EVERY rom available for it, more than once unsuccessfull; booting to black) ...

just get a GOOD (there is an entire thread here where one guy thought he bricked it and it was actually a bad cable) USB Cable and download the original firmware (POV or Vega makes no difference whatsoever) and follow the instructions to flash it.

POV is a bit different then vega, you just need to hold back for 2 seconds and while holding it press the power button

There is a PDF on the POV support website (looks like a windows explorer) with great instructions on how to flash the firmware

shameless plug:

if it really is broken, pm me i would be willing to buy it, my screen is broken and i am on the lookout for a broken device to replace the glass...

Sorry I haven't got back to this thread, works been mental and I haven't wanted to sit in front a screen after doing that at work for 8 hours!

My problems are going to be first getting my laptop to pickup the tablet, I have the driver files but all I manage to do is get the backlight to turn on and get my laptop to chime when I power it up.

If the back light comes on your not in restore mode, try again.

I have had a couple of p10an01 motherboards (both from vegas) and getting them into restore mode has been slightly different on both. The first one I had would not go into resore mode if the usb cable was plugged in. I had to do the back/power button thing with the usb unplugged and then plug it in, if I did it like this it worked everytime. My new motherboard works as advertised and will go into restore mode when the usb is plugged in.

Try the back button thing at different speeds, maybe thats the problem.

Have you installed vegatools? It has a automatic USB driver installer that is very useful. It will uninstall the old driver, install the correct driver and tell you when your in restore mode.

I have a POV mobii tegra 2 with docking and mine is flashed with the vegacomb 9n version indeed a larger system partition but it gives me a hack of a time installing larger apps. This is for the other than english languages to use.

i've put all i could in to the SD but still gives me low on memory storage issues. Often i need to remove an app to install a larger app and move if possible to SD then reinstall the app that isn't movable.

so the larger system partition isn't always the solution for this device.

I can't get proper root access somehow, haven't figured out what the problem is there so removing apps in the system folder that i don't need is not a option until solved.

Sometimes it restarts instantly and comes back without having wifi available, i have to set it in airplane and return to normal mode and then it comes back.

I like the specs of this device so much that i like to have this one operational for mobile work to use. Current rom has a full working day of energy coming from it's battery so that part works fine but Wifi and BT still having issues here not working decent enough together.

Same on the USB, i can't put my finger on it right now, the switching from host to device app isn't doing the job properly somehow.

I haven't been able to test 3G, still waiting on the modem to arrive, but that will be used often while working on the road.

Overall taken it has almost the same speed now as the Galaxy Tab 10.1 only half the costs over here so that makes this device very interesting for my work and pleasure after work.

As for speed and the work they put in it, wel this is a awesome rom and kernel, kudos for that. however still not perfect or almost perfect for daily usage without those problems solved.

Just my 2 cts here.

If you're running Vegacomb 3.2 Build 9n, chances are good that you are ROOTED. If you have access to Android Market, download Root Checker Basic ( https://market.android.com/details?id=com.joeykrim.rootcheck ), it will check for the SU binary and BUSYBOX.

You don't mention if you have FLASHED update3 (VegaComb_HC3.2_Build9n_update3.zip) over the top of VegaComb itself... if you haven't, then I would suggest you do so; it may resolve some of your WiFi issues - update 3 is available here http://www.multiupload.co.uk/86YRX1FY58

To clear up some confusion about the SYSTEM PARTITION.... your low storage space problems have nothing to with the SYSTEM PARTITION - this is where Android lives, and for most of the time, remains unchanged.

USER INSTALLED APPS, such as you might get from Android Market, live in the DATA PARTITION, more often called Internal Storage and is around 300Mb in size (dependent on ROM) - it's here where you are having your low storage space problems. App2Sd is a good App manager, and is available on Android Market ( https://market.android.com/details?id=com.a0soft.gphone.app2sd )

Finally, Bluetooth and WiFi have NEVER worked AT THE SAME TIME properly on Vega's (and their clones), and likely, they never will. Something to do with them using the same antenna, or so I have read.

Hope that clarifies a few things....

Yup same aerial so streaming music from the network to bt speakers is a bad idea, you get drop outs and the like. Okay with lower bandwidth bt stuff though.

Thanks for the reply,

It succesfully located SU on the device but failed to get root pivileges through SU. Busybox installed also.

i already did that before i mentioned this on the forum but lacked to say this in the post.

Still strange some apps ask for root and when granted it's accepted by some but not all? i still can't read or modify the /system partition.

I haven't a clue if that update is flashed on it, i purchased it in this condition, now that i am done playing and like to start tweaking some things to optimize it for my use.

Unfortunately i can't use this update link(Mac User here) i should need a .zip file to do it with one of the rom managers.( can any of you point me to such a file to update it for mac users)

My best guess is it's not installed all though it looks like it is according to the files that were on the external SD when i purchased it(the 9n update is there about 6 Mb large iirc). How or where can i check that in the system?

Sorry my mistake the /data partition i should have said indeed, was mixed up with that root stuff.

Hmm weird to use combined antenna system. haven't seen that before.

It clarifies some issues but did not solve the problems yet. I did root several devices but this is the first one keeps me away from my root access :-(

it's still a work in progress here.

thks and grts,

Ted.

Tried this again tonight after a busy weekend with no time. Managed to get Windows to notice I had plugged it in, alas the driver did not install with a 'No driver found' message.

The drivers I have downloaded do seem different from others I have come across (for printers etc), with no proper installation routine I am unable to browse and select the driver.

SUCESS!! After using Vega Tools and being patient for what seems like ages I was able to get the Pov into recovery mode, update the drivers and flash it with the advent rom.

Very pleased to get this back, quite suprised how bad the stock advent rom is, no market and no google apps. Going to check out reflashing to something better.

Recommendations please guys!

I still think that Vegacomb works best for me, maybe cos I was lucky enough to be involved. Its not perfect but it works. Honeycomb was never intended to work on that spec of tablet so some sacrifices had to be made.

you should keep an eye on the work Cass and Ed are doing with a kernel for ICS. There is an Alpha out at the moment which is great fun.

Paul, remember we all at one point knew nothing but there are many helpful people in these communities. The only silly questions are the ones you don't ask.

enjoy your POV, join in where you can and try to learn something in the process.

Billy..
