Wi Fi Mac Address Issues

Oops - seems like I don't know the difference between a Skate and a blade so will post here too (I have an Orange Monte Carlo which I believe is a Skate)

Hi To All and a Merry Christmas Already have a Nokia N8 on Virgin contract acquired last month, prior to this had a HTC Touch 2 (naff Windows based phone). Wanted to know what all the fuss was about with Android and didn't fancy spending a massive amount so armed with a £50 Argos voucher I got for Chrimbo, I reserved and picked up an Orange Monte Carlo for £89.99 + £10 SIM (WTF ???) Having had it for exactly 24 hours and hadn't even switched it on (new record for me) since picking it up, I decided I wanted out of Orange and have been delving on this forum for ideas. So far have managed to unlock it so now my Virgin SIM works on it and have installed clockwork Mod and changed the ROM to the latest Blue Monte-Plus ROM so far so good for my cack handedness but here goes the problems:

I didn't back up any of the orginal ROMS so have no .qcn files or anything Is there a way now that I can get the wi fi back working (I did however write down the wi fi MAC code beforehand) as MAC address is now shown as 11:22:33:44:55:66

Many thanks in anticipation

Many thanks for the kind response but as I have stated - like a fool I didn't do any backups and subsequently don't have the original .qcn file

I have also looked at the program but it only opens up half the box i.e. I can enter the old MAC address but there is no Start button for me to press ?

Follow this guide to get your mac address back: http://android.modac...nlocked-now-up/

You can also use this program to avoid having to mess about with hex editors: http://android.modac..._1#entry1864294

Good luck.

You don't need to have saved the original .qcn file. When you run software download it'll backup your current file, which is fine because the only thing that needs changing is your mac address. Follow the instructions carefully and read through that first thread I posted, as there's a lot of guidance outlined in there.

I don't know why the start button isn't showing up for you in the macchanger program. I just opened mine and it was fine. Perhaps try re-downloading. At any rate, there aren't really clear instructions on how to incorporate that program into the procedure for getting your mac address back for beginners, so it'll probably be a bit of trial and error. This is mostly new to me too, but I managed it without too much fuss. If you have problems I suggest you try asking the user named xaioyaoswim in one of his threads, as he seems to be a bit of a wizz with this stuff.

Thanks but following the instructions - in FTM mode I load up Software download only to get an error, swiftly followed by the program screen showing I have no phone connected.

I go to QPST Configuration only for it to tell me that my phone is connected to Com Port 8 ???

Mac Changer program is still only showing half a screen ???

Any ideas as I feel like I'm losing it with this - otherwise a good phone

BTW I am using Windows 7 Professional if this is the issue ???

If I was in your shoes I'd probably use QPST configuration to remove the port showing your phone and then click add new port, hoping that would sort the problem. But I don't really have much of a clue what I'm doing with QPST, so you're probably best to ignore that and wait for somebody more knowledgeable to reply as I don't want to mess up your configuration. Sorry I can't help with this.

Thanks for the honesty, I did remove and added and it made no difference - here's hoping somebody who can help spots this post ...

Thanks but I am running as admin and running it directly frm start menu - no shortcuts, any other ideas ? Is Windows 7 an issue ?

Run Software Download as admin.

Better, run it from the installation folder, don't use any created shortcuts.

If you have a data connection, go to the Android Marketplace on your phone and download a free app called "ES File Explorer"

Once it's downloaded, open it and go into the settings and scroll right down to the very bottom.

You should see "Root Explorer" and "Mount System as writeable" tick the boxes next to both of these.

If you scroll up a little bit, you should see a setting called "Home Directory" with the value of "/sdcard/". Shorten this down to just "/"

Come out of the settings, and hit the back button, if you look above the buttons (in the app) near the top you should now be in a folder called "/" (Next to a little phone icon)

Go into the "system" folder and then into the "etc" folder.

Scroll down until you see the file "nv_4319.txt" and select it. Choose to open it with the "ES Note Editor"

In this file, scroll down until you see the line that begins with "macaddr=", (It's my understanding if you lose your Mac Address this line defaults to "macaddr=11:22:33:44:55:66")

Remove the stuff after the "=" and input any 6 pairs of hex digits you would like. Since it's a mac address it's not required you must keep the original one. You're limited from 0-9 and A-F. If you want, you can put in your original Mac address.

For example, put this in its place: 00:90:4c:14:43:19

Hit the menu button, and save it. You'll get a little notification that says " was saved successfully!"

Come out of ES File Explorer, and go into your wifi settings. Turn it off and then turn it back on again. It should work now. If not, restart your phone. :)

Why would this make a difference?

In Windows 7 I have found that the built-in, over-protective system will identify programs that are not installed conventionally or in the default Windows \Program Files area will be identified as 'coming from an outside source' & have a block on them, this can easily be be removed by looking at the properties of the executable & selecting the 'Unblock' button.

Also programs identified in this way will only have 'full control' assigned to full administrators so if you haven't made yourself a full administrator it will sometimes need the 'run as administrator' selection unless you edit the permissions on the offending executable.

You must be running some very old software for Windows 7 to physically block it like that. I've only ever come across this just the once and I've had Windows 7 since it was first released as a public beta, so about a year before actual release.

You can also set the shortcut to automatically ask for admin privilleges every time it is opened.

I still fail to see how this would make a difference in this case. QPST tools is installed in C:\Program Files ((x86) If on 64-bit Windows) and asks for admin privilleges on start up automatically.

Exactly where the problem can come from, I installed QPST in c:\skate yesterday & it would not function correctly until I unblocked it & assigned the approriate permissions.

The reason I chose a root location comes from the habits formed before Windows even existed & MSDOS did not allow for spaces in path names so I usually avoid the default locations offered for utilities so that any command line activities are kept simple. :D

Many thanks jcmyall for explaining it step by step so that a simpleton like me can understand and yay ! I have now managed to get Wi Fi back using original Mac address - I do believe however that I will have to repeat this procedure every time I reflash the ROM (which hopefully won't be many times as I'm well happy with the one I flashed yesterday now that I have customised the background etc.

Will take me a while to get used to all of this but I just can't help tinkering with things hence my 2 month old Nokia N8 is now relegated to the 'spares collecting dust' pile along with my old PDA's from O2 and HTC's etc. - to be honest I nearly sent it back as I thought it was going to be a cheap pile of junk judging by the cheap flimsy back panel but sooooooo glad I kept it as it really does trounce everything I have had so far and I am not going to be tied don to proprietary crap like an iphone !

Cheers again !

This is true, unless you install Cyanogenmod 7. That automatically defaults the Mac address to the one I stated above. Lol. I'm not sure if Cyanogenmod 9 does the same.

Is it worth flashing to Cyanogenmod 7 ? I suppose it's no real hardship having to mod the .txt file (2 minute job) if it gets my Wi Fi working again. Anybody know if this is the same with Cyanogenmod 9 ?

Thanks again - I'm off to find out what else I can change on it like how to install an alternative sat nav (though the one included is good enough !)

@OP: You're welcome, I guess...

As a side note, you only truly execute a software as admin when it asks you for permissions(like in Android when requesting root permissions) or when you make it execute as admin(right-click & run as administrator)... AND the items in Start Menu ARE shortcuts.

EDIT

If you didn't make the *.qcn file edition to correct mac address then you'll have to edit the *.txt file(s) each time you flash a ROM, any ROM.

Personally, I would advise you Atomic ROM, which is very smooth and stable, but CM7 is equally good I guess.

Thanks I guess but the suggestions you make weren't really relevant i guess it was more of a driver issue that prevented my phone from being 'seen' by QTPS and my PC - the solution relating to modding the .txt file suggested by another user eventually did the trick although I do understand that this is a semi-permanent fix as I would have to repeat the process if I were to reflash the ROM.

Like I said before, any suggestions welcome and it's good to see forums like this which helps each other out rather than some scumbag trying to make a quick buck by 'selling the solution' on ebay.

When I was unlocking my OCM I had the same error until I used my notebook running Windows 7 x86 instead of my PC which is running Windows 7 x64. I also had to load up QPST Configuration, go to the ports tab, select to add the USB port and then I had to launch the application by selecting "Start Clients" and then clicking on "Software Download".

Also to fix the driver issues on Windows 7 x64 I just used device manager and then manually selected the driver I wanted to use from android_usb.ini as "ZTE Composite ADB Interface". After I did that I unplugged the device and then plugged it back in and I was able to access the phones memory card.

In all honesty it's down to preference. I prefer to use Cyanogenmod because it comes with more customisation options, like the ability to change what notification power widgets are shown, status bar tweaks (without having to flash something) and quite a lot of other things. It also comes with the T-mobile themer, which gives you loads of choice for looks from the Android Market.

Here's one for example. https://market.android.com/details?id=com.r3dx.theme.lunarui.black&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5yM2R4LnRoZW1lLmx1bmFydWkuYmxhY2siXQ..
