CyanogenMod Banned Apps Store?

If you've intentionally voided the warranty of one or more Android phone, you'll undoubtedly know of the most popular custom ROM chefs out there: CyanogenMod. The team are now considering taking another big step in the developer world by planning an app store for banned apps. To be clear, that is not "banned" as in necessarily illegal or pirated; rather apps that have been vetoed by Google, usually at the behest of network carriers or other third parties.

This app store would avoid that minefield altogether and make a host of apps blacklisted by Google and friends (such as console emulators and one-click rooting apps) available directly from your phone, with proceeds, presumably, being divvied up between developers and CyanogenMod.

While trawling developer forums - such as here at MoDaCo - for apps dreamt up outside-of-the-box can be an enlightening and worthwhile experience, one would presume a single repository for such software would go down a treat with users looking to trick out their phone easily. Developers would benefit too, making some pocket money with a particularly clever or useful app considered inappropriate for the Android Market or Amazon App Store.

The waters of this idea are being tested by ClockwordMod developer Koush, who recently has made news with his no-root tethering app being blocked by American network carrier AT&T. Take a peek at his Google+ page for more on the dev. vs corporation battle.

This is a great idea. Cyanogenmod is all about openness so it makes perfect sense. I have several XDA dev'd apps on my Nexus S which are not available through the market so having a central place, on the phone where I can find and update them would be ace

A great idea. When you shell out lots of money whether via a contract or pay and go, the phone should be YOURS. Apple have the right idea in not allowing networks to tamper with the OS. In fact, I think it is high time that the regulator stopped carriers from forcing unnecessary or pointless apps on the buying public. Orange is the worse offender with its hideous interface and money sucking apps.
