Screen responds erratically, reflashed but still stuck - please help

We bought our son a Vega for Christmas and installed Modaco R8 on it. Its been running fine until this evening when the screen stopped responding so we couldnt even unlock it.

After a few attempts I managed to boot into recovery mode and reflash the modded stock rom but when it reboots we get as far as the 'select your language' screen and get stuck again because the screen responds erratically - it scrolls sometimes but doesnt respond very quickly or consistly.

On one occasion I've got as far as the licencing screen but cant scroll far enough down it to accept the terms, so I'm stuck again. I cant boot it into ADB mode because I cant get to the settings screen to turn debugging on so am completely stumped at the moment. I've also tried the standard stock rom with the same results

One thing to point out is that we started with Vegacomb but had a similar issue after a few days. Once we'd gone back to Modaco R8 and run the screen calibration it worked ok, so I think this is some sort of software error but I dont know what to try next

Any help or ideas would be gratefully received - I'm about 95% of the way to either taking it back or just chucking it in the bin :(

Some Vega power supplies are known to cause enough electrical noise to interfere with the touchscreen. I have had this from time to time on mine. Are you running with the power pack connected or not?

It does it with and without the ac adaptor.

I got to the point where I'm fed up with it being unreliable , with random lockups etc so have just got back from PC World where they gave me a full refund for it, albeit after a bit of an argument as they initially they wanted to 'send it back for repair' :rolleyes: which I said I wasnt happy with .

One of the salesman gave me a knowing look later when I said we'd had problems with it and told me they've had several back like mine, so it seems if you get a good one you'll be ok but if you get a bad one they are a lot of trouble. We've decided that as it got so much use its worth going upmarket and getting something which is better quality, we just need to decide what that will be

Had the same issue, but had mine repaired on warranty - since then no problems - fingers crossed

I've got the same problem with mine. Regardless of whether I'm using the PSU, the touch screen is unresponsive and appears to be dead, but if I persist for an hour or so, it eventually comes to life, but the calibration is all over the place. If i recalibrate it, it works again, but as soon as I reboot, I end up with the same problem 70% of the time which is annoying. I don't know whether this problem is software or hardware related, as my screen worked perfectly until I started messing around with custom roms. I read somewhere that quite a lot of Vega's are faulty and that it has something to do with the touchscreen itself. See below.

I tried heating up the tablet with a hair dryer and it did come back to life, but then I also left it on a flat surface and again it came back to life after 10 mins, so I still don't know whether it's a software or hardware problem.

I got a letter through the post today from PC world letting me know that my warranty is nearly up. So now I don't know whether to send it back or not, as I'm still not convinced this is a hardware problem. I'm currently using Vegacomb 3.2 which is very impressive, apart from the touch screen problem. Is it true that the Vega is re-calibrated during every boot up? If so, is there anyway to disable it. Doing this might help me find out whether my problem is hardware or software related.

I forgot to ask! If I send it back, will it matter if I leave Vegacomb installed, or should I revert to the official ROM.

I would revert it to the official ROM and wipe the SD card - by installing a non standard ROM you've probably voided the warranty (even though I suspect PC World / Currys are selling them knowing they'll be rooted)

I had this problem when I switched to vegacomb, was really unresponsive, scraping the screen would kinda get a twitch but nothing more. I ran the screen calibration (after some determination) and that didn't fix it, i swapped back to modaco R8 and still the same... ran the screen calibration in modaco and that fixed it straight away. Funnily enough when I was running modaco a while ago, it went funny then as well, the screen calibration in that rom fixed it 1st time as well.

Thats exactly what happened to ours, except that after the second time I couldnt get it to respond at all, and after reading the article that chockimon linked to in post #5 above I'm glad I got my money back when I did. I guess thats just the luck of the draw - some Vegas are properly made and some aren't
