Guest Victor von Zeppelin Posted January 28, 2012 Report Share Posted January 28, 2012 I am primarily a PC gamer. I don't own an Xbox or a PS3 and thus I get all my games off of Steam. So when it was announced recently that Valve had made a Steam companion app for Android, I was a tad excited. After playing with it for a few moments (after getting an invitation of course, it’s a closed beta at the moment) I can say it does some nice things, but it’s not really finished yet. The features that are implemented do work just find, though. Chat is great and so is the store, as you’d expect from Steam. Steam news is in there in full, as well as profiles and groups, too. Left out though is your own steam library, so you can’t manage or see any of the games you own, which is a shame. A suggestion I’ve seen around is remotely initiating a download from your phone, which would be an excellent use of the shop features on the phone. Finally, I’d like to point out that the styling isn’t really Android enough. It shares the side bar in common with Facebook, but it just doesn’t look like anything else on the Android platform. Anyway, Holo dark (the ICS theme) even looks like Steam’s default colour palette -They could have easily have used that. And I must mention the buttons, they just feel like their hit areas aren’t large enough, it sometimes takes a few taps to register an input. However, all that aside this could be an interesting app going forwards. Sony has their PlayStation Official app, there are rumours of a Microsoft Xbox Live companion and with Steam, the big three gaming networks have an Android presence (I’m not counting Nintendo WFC, for obvious reasons).
