Google says "Goodbye to the Menu Button"

Since Honeycomb, the Android team has been trying to rid apps from use of the hardware menu button. As we know from ICS and the Galaxy nexus, a lot of new apps designed for the platform should make use of the new action bar that sits atop most of Google’s own apps. Unfortunately, uptake has been slow on the new UI paradigm and now Google is stepping up to the plate to promote the new design. First up was the Android Design page, and now they have produced a more in-depth guide to migrating away from the menu button and onto the action bar. If you’re a developer looking to get your apps working correctly with ICS (or indeed, any Android version above 3.0), then take a look at the link below.

In the meantime, Galaxy Nexus users who want a bit more menu button in their lives can try out Paul’s modifications on the forums

I use the menu button heavily, and find it incredibly frustrating on ICS having to scan the screen for wherever the developer has hidden the button.

Having the menu button mod makes using the phone so much more intuitive, even if the menus themselves appear all over the shop, but at least my thumb knows where to open it. While the Recent Apps button has its perks, why Google decided it should take precedence over key Android functions like Menu and Search is utterly beyond me.

I flashed my Nexus back to stock and spent a good ten minutes on the cusp of a meltdown until I got P's menu button back on.

Whenever I've persuaded someone to get an Android phone and they get stuck, I just tell them the Menu button holds the answer. Thank goodness for the dev. community eh?

As I'm stuck on Gingerbread, I find the inverse to be true. I'm fed up of a silly little menu button on the wrong side of the phone. I'd be happy scouring around the screen, honestly. Shouldn't the menu always be at the top right, anyway?
