Of all the different materials you might associate with mobile phones, bamboo is perhaps one that doesn’t spring immediately to mind, but lo and behold someone’s only gone and done made an Android one! In fact they’ve plans to make quite a few as they go on sale across the UK later this year.

The ADzero is the brainchild of Kieron-Scott Woodhouse, a 23-year-old design student, who created the handset from treated bamboo.

Bamboo is a durable material used abundantly throughout parts of the world like Asia for everything from chopsticks to scaffolding because it is extremely strong and light. These benefits will hopefully be evident when implemented in the design of a mobile phone, which can take their fair share of bumping and bashing over the years.

The designer claims the bamboo-encased Android is actually half the weight of the iPhone, despite having a bigger screen.

More after the break...

It’s not clear which version of everyone’s favourite OS will feature on the phone, or indeed exactly what its guts and gizzards consist of. But the ADzero does have a very neat bit of kit in the form of an inbuilt ring-flash camera which should light subjects uniformly and minimise shadows.

Specification and hardware aside, I really think it looks fantastic - clean, eye-catching and very different. Even if it doesn’t turn out to be a powerhouse of a phone, I’d still love to have one.

Have a look at the official ADzero page for yourself, and see just how lovely this thing is in the gallery.

I have a feeling they will go mid-range with the spec and sell it on style and make more profit but I really hope they make a high end device like this.  I love the look and would be very keen on a Galaxy Nexus type spec level

I have the same feeling. I can hope it at least comes with ICS. Will try and dig out who is making the internals and what they're hoping to sell it for, but I too hope it's high enough of a spec for developers to take interest.

Fingers crossed, it won't be one of the fancy Prada-esque handsets that costs the earth but has the performance of a digital egg timer

What is the minimum spec you guys would need to be seriously interested buying this phone?
