Siemens has revealed a brand new smartphone running the Symbian OS platform. It is expected to hit the market till this summer, supporting almost everything!

Looks like they've taken a worng turn somewhere with the design of that phone, bit like nokia have doing lately too. Don't they realise that people are used to the normal keypad layout? I wonder how typists would react if every computer and typewriter manufacturer were to change their keyboards' layouts depending on what they thought might be fashionable that month?

True true there, the keyboard looks a bit weird.

I bet that must be fun trying to learn how to SMS with the keyboard around the side ?

Oh well, we will have to wait and see.

Oh dear is all I can say.

If that phone goes ahead with the numbers up the sides then it will be all but useless for messaging. It looks 100× worse than the nokia3650.

That's what happens when you let arty people loose with real designs, and allow concepts to escape into the real world  It might look nice on paper or as a clay model, but has anyone actually tried using one? Then again I would say that, I'm an engineer, with no artistic talent! :)

(Also being an engineer...) If you think about it you can't use it single handedly, which the SPV does very well. To type SMS's on the Siemens you would have to hold it in a similar way to a games console control pad, or else you would constantly be covering the screen when you strech your thumb to the other side.

At least the joystick looks a little more useable than the SPV's though...

Easy now - the 3650 surely must be the worst, ugliest piece of shite Nokia have ever fobbed off on gullible fashion-victims. At least this Siemens has a relatively pleasing overall design, at least from an aesthetics point of view. The 3650 just looks wrong. That circular "dial"? How twee is that? F...... Nokia.

Yes, true, perhaps I went over the top there - the nokia3650 is an extremely shoddy design.

I was mainly referring to the ease of input.

Whilst that siemans looks nice it would be impossible to use one handed to bash out a quick text.

The nokia might be slightly (debatably) easier to use one handed than the siemans (havnt tried so dont know) - but agreed it's design is the worst I've seen in a long time.

I suspect that you're right, the Nokia will be better to use than this Siemens - and the SPV (or any "normal" phone) is better than any of them :)

Is it me or does the joystick, although more useable than ours, look like it sticks out too much? That would be (quite literally) a pain.

As with most manufacturing industries they are running low on different designs (look at the car market), so throw out a concept design and wow everyone and lets hope that hides how they have missed out loads of functionality from the phone.

Heh, my 6 year old sister would probably think that was a younger child's toy...

*lol*

When it is, in fact, an older child's toy for tech-victims like us

Ummm.

Could be making (more) of a fool of myself here but..........

If held in, say, your left hand with screen upmost, using thumb curled naturally around the back you can press keys 1-5 +*

Fingers naturally placed to use index to do keys 6-0 +#

Bit like playing a guitar (purists wouldn't use their thumbs though!). :)

Is that how it is meant to be used?! :?

That would really bug me having to use two thumbs to even dial a number! If it's 7650 size then you wouldn't be able to reach both sets of numbers with 1 thumb either - what are they thinking! And it'd be useless for games that are designed to use the standard keypad - imagine trying to play tennis addict on it!

When will designers learn - it's good to think outside "the box" but remember "the box" is there for a reason so don't change it unless you can justify it with more than "the new design looks nicer". In other words - for most situations, if it ain't broke, don't fix it! :)

And as big as a 7650/P800... damn

that's one of the appeals of the SPV is that it's small... sure it costs you on battery capacity and external camera, but I can put it in my shirt pocket.

Agreed - the SX-1's light though, according to sebset's post - the 7650 weighs a bloody ton (ok, cut me some slack here). Still, when I need a PDA then I'll just dig my "old" iPaq out (GPS jacket, how cool?)
