Discussing rooting with a colleague at work, who asserts that the mere act of rooting a device can lead to decreased stability and more regular crashes. Bear in mind this is talking about just rooting the device - not the actions/mods/etc you might do once the device is rooted.

Is there any truth in this? He claims that the mere fact you're exploiting a vulnerability in the OS implies that you'll be compromising stability, but I can't see that this is the case (and haven't ever read any anecdotal evidence that would suggest this).

Be interested to know what the experiences and expertise amongst seasoned rooters says on this topic!

I think that if you root and stay on your stock ROM, that's the only possibility of slightly less stability. I personally after switching to CyanogenMod 7 have seen an increase in my stability. CyanogenMod 7 has root built in where as you are adding root files to a stock ROM, this may have something to do with the stability. But anyway I don't think rooting compromises the stability especially.
